Wanting to replace the speakers in the old Mercedes - it has 3-1/2" one way speakers in all 4 locations - not even ones with wizzer cones. Speakers differed in these by year, older cars had 6x9s in them. Kicker makes a 3-1/2" speaker AND a 6x9. ASS-U-ME-ing I can actually utilize the 6X9s, would that be a better choice? Or should I stick with the 3-1/2"?

There is NO WAY to put 5-1/4" speakers in this car - although it might be possible in the back only with a surface mount or semi-surface mount arrangement. However, neither Crutchfield nor much of anybody else seems to sell surface mount speakers or grilles - they used to be common. To add insult to injury, both the above referenced kickers do NOT come with grilles of any kind, which is also creating a headache for reasons I won't go into now - long and involved...

Any advice?

Maybe run it by a pro shop for advice? Without having hands and eyes on the car, I’d assume they would give the best advice on fitting and best speaker to go with. I assume you don’t want to cut the doors...

Correct - I just want to use the stock locations - although not necessarily the stock grilles and mountings.

I opt for a three way 6x9. They have a big enough cone to reproduce the low frequencies and a crossover to protect the mid and tweeter. The pioneer TS 6907 was a beast.

3.5 rounds will make very little bass. Seems like I had 5.25 and 6x9 combo in my 300D and it sounded pretty decent.

Try calling Crutchfield and seeing what they have to say. They haven't steered me wrong yet on some of my older restorations / refreshes. Folks on the phone are really knowledgeable.

Their only rec is 3.5s in all 4 positions. And said 3.5s don't have grilles that come with them. I'm now thinking of trying a pair of Pioneer 4x6s that do come with grilles - coupled with a "booster ring". I'm 99% sure that will work in the back one way or another, but I'll see if I can get them to work in the front as well, and order a second pair if they do.
