Quite possibly....but if I'm not mistaken, it was also the cheapest to build by a remarkable difference. Cheap horsepower is always going to have a following, well, until internal combustion engines are outlawed for us common folk...
As for it being the "best engine around" (a statement made which appears to have prompted your response), that's purely subjective. That's like saying Taylor Swift is the best singer around (I think I just threw up a little bit...)
I had read many, many years ago that the SBC was also dimensionally similar to the Ford flathead V8. This was considered a factor in the early transplants, as it would physically fit into the space previously occupied by the less powerful flattie, or anywhere that the flathead V8 could be placed. As previously mentioned, cost and availability of aftermarket parts was also taken into consideration. I'm with you on both (Did you watch the Swift/Kelce Bowl? I could give two fecks... ).
Now I did grow up in a GM leaning household, but I outgrew the brand ignorance pretty quickly when I started going hands-on with vehicles. I even find merit in a fair bit of foreign stuff.

I grew up in a Blue Oval family, but rebelled, and went full-on Mopar, and eventually AMC. Nowadays, I pretty much can find an appreciation for most anything. And yeah, I've flirted with the idea of forming a relationship with a British car or two, but I try to maintain some level of sanity, and therefore have never actually crossed that line.

Based on the postings in this thread, I suspect you gents like a bit of fabrication and custom auto work. As such, you might like this YooToob channel, in the event you're not already aware of it...

These guys do some impressive work and it's a weekly watch for me.
That's because you like driving rather than walking. Good call Squatch.
I was going to say something similar. There's a reason MG owners typically drive in a "club".
with at least one roll back !
The last time I saw a group of MGs, they were sitting in a line on the side of the highway. 7-8 cars, and at least 4 had their hoods open with people getting in there. I honked my horn as I blasted by in my Chrysler. I never saw them at the cruise-in.
Here is what hot rods actually look like before Chip and Boyd were involved.

Look at those jalopies. I sure do wish hot roddin' was as "cheap" as it was back when those cars were worn out throwaways. Hell, even a 90's Civic is expensive nowadays.
