Check gauges after ECS (Engine Coolant Sensor) replacement

Hey Everyone,

First time posting and first time Jeep owner. I just bought a 98 Wrangler 4.0 Sport 5 Speed. Drove it home over an hour away and it started up and ran like a champ. It sat for 2 days and I started it up to take it for inspection. It then stalled and would not turn over. I could get it to crank but it would not actually start unless it sat for awhile. After lots of research and verifying with a code reader I determined it was the Engine Coolant Sensor so I replaced it and now she runs great, However, the Check Gauges and Check Engine lights have come on and the coolant temp is showing over heating the minute it starts. I'm not getting any more codes yet and would love to get it inspected so I can start truly enjoying it. Any idea why replacing the ECS would cause this? I haven't tried clearing the codes yet or disconnecting the battery. I appreciate any help you can give.

Have you checked to see what codes it's currently throwing?

Just spitballing here, but it's a pretty well known fact that these vehicles for whatever reason or another reject sensors other than OE Mopar sensors (there's plenty of stories about it), so I'm curious what brand of sensor you used as the replacement?

Hey Chris, I replaced the sensor with a Delphi brand. They say they’re an OEM part. But that’s good to know going forward because since I am a first time Jeep owner, I was not aware they reject parts that aren’t OE. Right now I’m not getting a new code, I’m guessing because I’m not driving it currently since it’s not inspected. Hopefully I can run it around the block a few times tomorrow and see if I can get a code out of it.
