Compatible engines for 1999 Wrangler 4.0 L automatic

After seeing low oil pressure, I pulled the oil pan and the engine is toast.

Looking at buying a used engine and I want to make sure that I’m only looking at compatible years that are a simple straight across swap

I’m not a mechanic. Looks like quite a bit of brass in the bottom of the pan and the connecting rods have a slop on the crankshaft

Just bought this jeep for my son a few months ago and it had been running fine

Perfect candidate for a father son learning extravaganza.

Rolling in new crank bearings is completely doable without removing the engine.

You'd need to remove the exhaust and drop the skid plate.

Then the oil pan comes off. (And you already ate there!)

Remove the girdle. Then pull off a bearing cap. Back side should have numbers.

I'd do a rear main seal at the same time. And a new Melling oil pump.

If the timing chain moves a lot...you can just get a finger on it...then I'd do a new one. And if I was going after a timing chain I'd do a fan clutch, water pump and crank pulley.

Lots of YouTube videos on this. Check out DexJs - almost all Cherokee content but a 4.0 is a 4.0.

Jeep 4.0s are the easiest engines to work on. Parts are cheap.

I pulled my oil pan in a parking lot and beat out a dent causing a tick.



And I frame and tub swapped my Jeep in eight days.

Easy hard weekend project. But totally doable.

And I'd trust rebuilding yours rather than a gamble on something used.
