Corner armor... goes on, never comes off?

Paint your Jeep like this and you won't even notice the corner armor.
p.s. Some people install corner armor AFTER the damage is already done.

Got the Euro taillight grilles removed tonight and decided to leave the tail lamps off the back and attack this corner "armor". As far as I can tell there's no underlying damage and they are legit riveted into the body. Cleaned everything and prepped for a coat of... something. Either flat black or a very dark grey, likely. Put it to a vote?
You won’t get paint to stick to the aluminum unless you do some specific prep work. All aluminum oxidizes almost immediately, so even if you sand it prior to laying down a coat of primer it oxidizes before you have time to pick up the rattle can. The oxidized layer is what keeps the paint from adhering long term. To do it correctly, and have a chance of a lasting finish, there are aluminum chemical cleaning and prep products on the market which convert the surface to something that paint will adhere to. I’ve done it before, and here is the stuff I used if you are interested.
Here was the end result. I didn’t get fancy with it. Just hit it with some Krylon to see whether I liked it better.
That's much less obnoxious. You indicated that a repaint may be in your future, so perhaps live with them until then.
The site may have just stretched a few oddly, the last one looked normal. The rest looked fish eye, which the iPhone doesn’t have.
The iPhone 12’s do have a wide angle though which is what I was using since it was parked in the garage. I think taking that corner shot does add to the distorted perspective perhaps.
