This forum was a ton of help with my rear axle (Dana 44), so I thought I would ask again. I honestly thought I wouldn't need to ask anything due to everything I've seen and read.....but here I am.

So I have ran my pinion depth from 48 to 58 and I will include the pictures of the steps, the first if 58, 56, 54, 52, 50, and 48. For each picture backlash was between 6 and 8, but I did experiment with 10 just to see what it would do. So I am mostly looking for recommendations as to why such a hard line on the root mostly no matter what the pinion depth is, this is on the drive side? Any insight would be great. On the root side I have a decent pattern from 48-52.

I would set it back up with 58 and try patterning again and try not to use too much compound and lots of pressure. If you look at the coast side (which is the drive side for a LP30) it looks pretty good.

I didn't realize that the coast side is the drive side, so to speak, on a lp30, if I did I would have put those pictures up because those show what I would expect with the changes. This is the coast side @58

If you look at the top two teeth in that pic you can see the drive side with less paint has a pretty good pattern as well.

What made me try so many different setups is that I never saw a thin line all the way across the top of the tooth on the drive side. And with the 58 isn't the pattern more to the outside than you would want? At least from what I've gathered that's what I thought. For a comparison this is 54 coast and drive it is more centered wouldnt that be preferred?

Thanks for the help.

On that pattern there the drive side is running off the crown(top) of the tooth.

Now that you say that I do see it. It wasn't the main part of the contact area so my untrained eye didn't notice it.

It is all good. If you really want to see your pattern change from what you are seeing try going with 62-63 and see how that looks.

I probably will just to see what it looks like for learning reasons, hell I've already done 7 or so different setups, what's one more.
And don't worry about it being not centered toe to heel.

Good to know. That was one of my main concern, with the patterns I was seeing, I couldn't get both sides to appear centered at the same time like I could on the Dana 44 gears.
