Designed to rot

There was definitely some poor design choices made with the frame in terms of drainage for the frame. Makes me wonder if they even attempted to fix it with the JK or JL.

They fixed the issue. My JK has big bottom holes on them and rectangular slots in the sides that I can insert the wand to power wash the inside of the frame.

Would one of you fine folks draw up a schematic of the TJ frame and show where you've drilled drain holes.

I drilled four 5/8” holes in my frame. In front of the rear wheels and behind the front wheels at the low point of the frame.

I had a '72 Duster here in WI. It was so rust-prone I called it "The Ruster." The rear spring mount on one side was going, I had that repaired with welding. Trunk floor patched with new metal. Then I lost a torsion bar mount. This was around 1984. Maybe it's Chrysler.

When I was growing up my dad welded a 4 ft long piece of iron channel across the floor of the neighbor's Dodge Coronet and welded both rear shackle mounts to it after they both popped up through the floor.

He also welded in some 1/4 steel "frame" replacements where the torsion bar mounts pulled out of at least three different Darts/ Dusters.

While these were all Chrysler products, I still blame the idiots constantly spreading the salt.
 
The roads here are slathered with salt/sand, sodium chloride, and Lord knows what else in the winter. It's frustrating trying to keep your vehicles in nice shape. But our 2008 Honda CRV has no rust at all. My 2004 Wrangler is driven less but looks worse.
 
I had to safety cap my 2000 tj. There is a reason chrysler is #3 of the big 3.My friend bought a ram 1500 4 years ago and it looks 15 years old already with rust everywere.I have no idea were they get there metal but the hydroforming we did on there front ends were very thin metal.Cheap is cheap as they say. I see lots of new ram trucks on the road so it must be because of low financing or leases. Sorry for the ranting.A little off subject.Bad engineering is still bad engineering.

Agree to the above, we have a 2005 Honda Element that doesn't have any body corrosion. Lots can be prevented by proper treatment of the steel.

But salt usage is out of control. You would think neighboring Illinois being completely broke would tone it down.

Some mornings here when it frosts despite it warming into the 40's by mid morning, they salt and chloride the bridges. It's like they have to hurry out there and get it done before mother nature solves the problem.

Another flaw is the chloride the state crews spray on the bridges, gets into every pore in the concrete and ruins it and the rebar. Then at some point you have to turn onto a county or township road and holy shit the bridge is slick (how do drive now!)

Keep in mind every intersection you encounter...that clapped out minivan heading towards it from your side going 50 mph only 300 feet from the stop......are their brake lines going to hold this time when they cram the pedal?
 
Even US Navy ships made with top-quality steel and treated against rust/salt exposure will rust/corrode if the sailors don't keep after the rust with chippers and paint. The rust isn't caused by using low quality "Chinese" steel, it's the salt. Even the best quality steels rust in such environments... the US Navy being a prime example of good quality steels rusting/corroding if not kept after with chipping and painting. Coating the undercarriage with good quality treatments is how to keep the rust at bay in areas where there's salt on the roads. Not doing that is going to cause rust/corrosion. Blame the owner for lack of taking appropriate aftermarket preventive measures like undercoatings for rust, not the steel chassis itself. Unprotected steel rusts, period.
