i just replaced my thermostat & water pump. i have top off coolant, let the air get out. when do you fill the reservoir. when the engine is hot or cold?

If you over fill the reservoir, it will eventually self correct through the molded tube on the side.

I fill to Full when cold.

I then check it and top it off after cooling down from each of the first 3 warmup cycles, as the level will drop a bit each time as any remaining air is burped out.

The full mark is like 1/4 of the way down from the very top, to allow for some more in there when hot. Fill to that line when cold, then check it every few days as you'll probably have some air work it's way out.

But in general as long as it's above the low mark when cold you're fine. Just something to keep an eye on. If the level keeps slowly dropping all the time and you're adding coolant every week or so consistently then you have a small leak somewhere.
