Does anyone run trail doors / half doors on the trail?

I’ve been looking at the UCF doors for all the same reasons you did. How do they feel? Close nice? Rattle? I love that I can just put on a regular upper with those.

No rattles yet. I have put on a few street miles both ways, upper on and off. They are made well. The only awkward part is the inside door handle. It is no longer in front of you. I’m kinda used to it as I had a CJ, but I did get used to the full door handle. The extension I put on the latch handle fixed most of the reach problem.

The new upper soft windows were a bear to get onto the old frame. It’s probably 95f outside so the temp was not the issue for sure. They do look good and I think this is going to be the tough trail option. Here are some pics:

I used 10-32 SSBH screws 3/8” long. Large fender washers on the inside

I like the layout of the bag. It will be easy to configure. Here are some ideas.

I see the bracket for the soft upper is tied into the hinge. Do you think it would be very difficult to make the stock style hinges work with these doors?

It would be fairly easy. You would need the other half. A few holes drilled and I think it would work.

That said, the doors come off easy and the OE doors go on just as easy. I put my doors away with the stock mirrors. If I want to swap, it’s just a few mins.

The new mirrors have a thumb screw that pulls out and just the bracket is left.

the doors themselves were pretty complete. I had to find the upper soft frame off of offer up. I bought the soft uppers (tinted ) from eBay.

Cool thanks. I’m definitely leaning towards this route, but I would put the stock style hinges and mirrors (I have OCD) thanks for the tips

Installed factory style mirrors on my JCR s and have been running around town the last couple weeks and a quick trip to the canyon last weekend. I'm loving the trail/half door driving. After many doorless trips in our old cj and some in the tj, while loving the visibility, I miss somewhere to rest my arm like crazy!
I needed factory style hinges for my eye. Don't mind reaching back to release the latch but like idea of the cable savvy style.

I’ve strongly considered running a cable from the latch to the front of the door, could even hinge it on a lever similar to Savvy’s. Then it’d open in the front.

The Cleetus parachute handle would work

it’s funny how habit forms, now I toss on my hard doors from time to time and expect the release to be at the back… and laugh when I’m confused for that split second.

Did the same thing for months when I still had the '79. I'm sure it will be the same. Driving all our different trucks for work i catch myself constantly reaching for something that isn't there.

I played with something like that with a bike brake lever and could be a winter project with football in the background. Share if you do something with that!

That would work. I could draw up a handle and use a cable and ferrule gig.

I dunno about the doors and mirrors but that is a good looking rig.

Your tires look huge! Lol. Fiberglass hood? Or did you find an AEV one somewhere?

Just 35s. :)

Its an AEV. Bought it that way. I knew it was somewhat unique but didn't know exactly what it was until it was pointed out to me by @Chris soon after I joined the forum. That was my first taste of all that I did not know.
Have mention before but yours is one of my favorites on here. ;)

Lol, After I put on my full doors after a long time with the trail doors, I find myself still reaching outside thru the open window to open the doors from the outside handle.
