Does the OE gear shift knob have a set screw to keep it in place?

I've been under the impression all along it was almost impossible to remove the shift knob without destroying it, or least the plastic insert with the shift pattern. (6 speed)

Pretty much true if you don't have a heat gun. The rubber around the insert will permanently deform if you try to pry the insert out while cold. Once damaged, you might be able to heat it up form it back close to it's original shape with some patience.

I was never much a fan of the stock knob anyway, so when I did my AX15 swap I put on an 80s Toyota knob in honor of my Toyota (Aisin) transmission. It doesn't have a locknut or a set screw, it just has a length of plastic threads that deform and hold tightly onto the steel threads of the lever like a nylock nut, so it doesn't twist except on purpose.
