I really doubt your wiring is at fault with the fuzzy speaker sound.
I'll start looking at head units then.

My next head unit will be Sony's new high power model. At 40 RMS watts per channel, its power is nearly double that of most other head units. I don't know of any with nearly as much power. It puts out so much power, relatively speaking, that it has a separate power lead that must be connected directly to the battery. That's enough power for when your top is off and need a little more power.I'll start looking at head units then.

It's true, that's more power, of course, but remember, in audio, to double actual sound you have to increase Ten Times the RMS watts. So to double the sound you would get from 20 RMS you'd have to go to 200 RMS. That helps people understand why amp ratings can be so high (Dr Brown says you might need 1.21 gigawatts!)My next head unit will be Sony's new high power model. Like the other guys said, super easy. And yea, Crutchfield sends all the necessary stuff to install; dash kit, wire harness, antenna connector, instructions. Lots of good head units available. I have a Sony media player, no cd, and works great. Was only 70ish bucks too.How difficult is it to change out the head unit?
View attachment 13884 If your content with the stock, I could sell you mine for $25+s/h. It works fine. Just uninstalled from my 2005 TJ X in January. The pic of the back shows the harness connection in upper right and the antenna in upper left. If they're the same and you want it let me know.

Crimp a solderless terminal onto that power wire. Then at the rear-most end of the Power Distribution Center closest to the battery, there is a lug with a nut on it that you can attach it to. It's under a small protective cover that just unsnaps off & lifts up.How would you go about hooking it directly to the battery?

That power wire from the Sony radio has a big fuse on it already. If you do it this way, make SURE you fuse that wire!
Sounds good (no pun intended)! Two things most don't think to consider. Maybe you already have. One is water resistant circuitry, especially if you get caught topless in rain. Two is a white screen background with black letters for better visibility when topless. Have fun! A new head unit deserves two new polks in the dash too!I appreciate that. I'm thinking since it sounds like I need to replace my current factory head unit, I should just go aftermarket.
I'm currently looking at Sony, Kenwood and Alpine.

I didn't think about white screen and black letters. I'll have to look and see what I can find.
And I've been thinking of replacing the speakers in the dash. Should I get another set of the Polk DB522, 5.25"? Or should I go with the 4x6?
Yeah, I saw it. Wanted to make sure that anyone else reading the thread that doesn't have the Sony remembers that power wires need fuses. Usually installation kits come that way, but if you're like me, you make your own harnesses and need to add your own fuse. That power wire from the Sony radio has a big fuse on it already.
I dunno where you'll find that on a conventional head unit. Some touch screens have that but touch screens aren't the way to go in a Jeep since you can't operate them by feel and it's too dangerous to take your eyes off the road long enough to see where your finger needs to touch. I wouldn't want a touch screen radio in any of my vehicles.I didn't think about white screen and black letters.
