(Engine experts needed) Chirp, Vibe, Pop (What is Wrong?)

Check the fluid level in the SC nose

It's maybe slightly on the low side at 1/8"ish below the threads. It was filled by Boosted Tech so maybe that is the level it's supposed to be at. Either way, I don't think it's the problem.

One other thing that I've tried is checking that the driveline isn't touching anything if it moves around and driving without the skids. I can't find anything that's rubbing or touching.

Remove the sparkplugs and have a look. If you have pre-detonation there will be teeny tiny balls of aluminum on the insulator and ground. Be sure the plugs are the correct temp. Regardless of the recommended number for the boosted application, you should verify efficient burn by plug condition.

I pulled 1 and 2. They look normal to me.

If the sparkplugs look good, is there still a chance that it's engine knock? If not, I'll cancel the knock sensor order since I'm leaning toward engine swapping.

The serpentine belt shredded tonight after 1300 miles. Occam's razor suggests that was the source of the issues. I had aligned it the best I possibly can using a laser and straight edge and have the most belt wrap possible and good tension on the belt. I also tried different belts. And I had no issues with the stock belt for 83k miles. There possibly is multiple issues going on. At this point I really don't know if the noise was coming from the belt, the transmission or something else but regardless if I'm going to have to replace the belt every 1k miles that's not going to work for me. If my engine is somehow out of whack causing the belt to have issues I don't feel like replacing the engine with another inline 6 to find out. I've already spent around $200 trying to solve the chirp. To avoid cost creep on something that may not be fixable, the most I'm willing to pay at this point is a few hundred more dollars to fix the issue so I can get a few fun reliable years out of it. I think it's time to swap the engine out with something designed for what I want out of it instead of pushing the inline 6 to it's limit.

You already know the answer, LS time.

And here I was thinking my last build spiraled out of control

You my friend have got me beat by a long shot. Not to say I'm not enjoying it (I am).

I think to push those 37s and really be enjoyable, 300+ HP at the wheels would be the sweet spot.

I will say, I admire your tenacity in figuring it out. Kudos.

I will also say, what mrblane said in your build thread made a lot of sense too. I mean, yeah it’s your money and ideas but he had a good point.

as much as I do like the 4.0 for what it is, left stock, a nice LS trans and atlas would just be the icing on the cake.

Sorry man.

The one thing I have going for me is that I can spread my costs over 10 years of owning it. We don't need to average the costs over how many miles I've put on since the rebuild...

I refuse to admit that this is out of control. :giggle:

RIP Boosted 4.0L 2020-2020.

Hell yeah man, been watching a lot pre runner stuff lately and it gives me so much hype to build one....

As disappointed as I am right now, I am thankful this boosted stock engine really has been a blast to bomb around on and allowed me to see that the rest of my build is on point and will handle excellently doing prerunner type stuff (as much as a Jeep can anyway) in addition to all of the rock crawling I built it for which is only encouraging me to put more HP into it.

I'm pretty sure you could dump the 4.0 off on somebody here.
I heard @Chris will be wanting to re-power;)

I probably will post it up at some point just so it's not sitting in my lawn forever. Everything was great stock but I also don't want to sell somebody something on it's way out so we'll see.

There you go! I know what you mean, speed is addictive and after my last few years spent in the SXS world chasing others around on the dunes, going back to a stock TJ is a bit boring. I keep reminding myself though, I left the world of speed cause it’s damn expensive and I’m raising three boys.

But a healthy 400+ HP LS makes my heart race.

I’m glad you go the build sorted though, one last piece....

With time and funds being what they are, I'm living vicariously through your build right now. For my own selfish enjoyment, I say you ignore the belt issue entirely and assume the engine is blown. You...we...I... need an LS!

Hopefully its a short money, quick fix of a new belt and your up and running. If not I'll keep an eye out for UPS and that supercharger your sending me.
;)

The things I do for my country. A V8 is just about as American as, well, it's actually the most American thing I can think of. 🤟

If I can find the issue, the inline 6 will be staying a while longer while I figure out the swap. If I can't stop it from chirping I have trust issues with driving further at this point.
