Engine over revving until 3rd gear

I recently replaced the engine in my 98 tj and I just got the clutch and transmission put in. When driving it has way to much gas and is over revving and is getting no speed until 3rd gear but still is over revving. 5th gear it even gives me the “change gear up arrow” but it’s a five speed so I can’t. Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.

So what can be done or what should I look at to fix this, I’m kind of a novice at this so I know what parts are but not what to do with them per se

Who put the clutch and gearbox in? Sounds like your clutch is slipping.
You can replicate your problems by dipping the clutch on a functioning clutch.
Was the clutch and pressure plate new and correct for the gearbox?

My friend his dad and me, they have a lot of experience building and rebuilding tj’s and yj’s so I hope it’s correct. And it should be the correct one. I bought it on ExtremeTerrain and it’s the regular clutch kit for 94-01 2.5L TJ. My assumptions usually fail me so if I messed up please do tell haha

They have the experience so they should know if the clutch is slipping once they drive it.
I have never done a clutch on a TJ so my guess was on your symptoms only.
Take it to a Clutch and Brake shop they will tell you in an instant given it has a new clutch fitted.
And keep your foot off the clutch pedal unless changing gear

I just figured out that If I pull up on the 4wd shifter and hold it in 4 low it’ll get speed and drive normally. But it won’t stay in place. Starts grinding a bit if i let up just a little bit. No over revving and regular driving except me having to hold it in 4 low, but 2 high and 4 high it over revs

A failing clutch will slip less in low range - so that still makes sense. However, if you have to hold the shifter to keep it in low range something else is also going on - perhaps the shifter is also out of adjustment.
