Battery swap stations were way ahead of the technology they needed. They tried it in Israel and it failed a dozen years ago.
Interesting idea. I thought I remembered something like that. You could predict it wouldn't work great for a recharge but the point I take from that is battery swaps at end of battery life don't need to be hard.
I learned it as a case study in business school. It was an expensive way to overcome the technological problem of charge time.
I think that Elon's push to build a supercharger grid was inspired by this. Without available charging or battery swap stations EV's would be useless for anything that wasn't within your home range. It's way cheaper to build a supercharger station than it is to have a battery swap station, also no onsite employees needed. The faster you can charge the less useful a swap would be.
Other issues with battery swap is forecasting demand and such, how many batteries do you have to have on hand how long did it take to charge a depleted battery in 2007? Demand could quickly outpace the capacity of the swap station.
But yes, the swap can be done if they designed them that way. I think Tesla batteries have a 10 year warranty or something like that so it's not a common occurrence and it'll get cheaper over time.

A lack of government mandates will effect VW and GM . They drank more of the Kool-aid than anyone else . Plus they likely thought they could change the entire product line quicker than everybody else , and make huge money .
I have a hard time believing that. Also, WTF did he say. From what I understand faster charging leads to reduced battery life. Is that still true?
