I saw my first one yesterday, then saw the Hummer EV and finally a Rivian...all fugly
Haven't seen the Hummer, but the Rivian - while ugly - isn't nearly as ugly as the Cybertruck. Not even by an order of magnitude.

I just can't get past the front/headlights. The cyberfuck on the other hand is hideous from every angle!

When you see either of them, you know exactly what they are though.
One of the first Rivians I saw in the wild was stuck in a ditch on the side of a snowy road.
I was in Mankato Minnesota for work this week. It snowed and got down to around 12 or so over night, -1 wind chill. The guy in the spot next to me at the hotel warmed up his Tesla for a good 20 minutes while I was packing up my stuff, cleaning off the 4 inches of snow, and scraping windows.
Come on it was 12 out nancy-boy, just scrape the windows and go. I bet his range dropped that day.
I don't understand car people that warm up cars forever either. But the funny thing was the engine noise it made. I'm assuming from a speaker. That's how I knew it was "running".

Was flipping around the TV last weekend and saw a segment on Motortrend channel for one of these. They installed one on an F150 Lightning. Choose the sound of a Hellcat, Corvette, Cobra...and more for your EV! Thought it was ironic, funny and sad all at the same time

Saw my first cyber truck this week. It sure is different.
Buddy has the Rivian SUV. It's very nice, very big, and VERY fast. 830ish HP. So fun to drive.

I assume he wanted it toasty inside. In a Tesla, a seat warmer and steering wheel heater works for that just fine if you wear a coat.
With an ICE that means moving. Anything over a couple minutes is heating it up slower. Start them, baby the first couple miles for the axles/transfer case to get lubed up, go.

My truck has electric heat until the engine heat is ready, plus heated seats and wheel. It’s pretty nice to have in the frozen hell I live in.

Funny. In the past, I’ve thought about this. They missed it though. Just having V8 ICE sound tracks is too predictable. How about horse drawn carriage (“clip, clop, clip, clop”), Jetson’s car, Turbine engine, Harley, fart pipe, dog sled with Yukon Cornielus driving? I could go on…

I had an 03 Civic with 300k on it that I used as a work vehicle. I was on a 4-lane divided state highway, 55 mph, approaching an intersection. A Chevy 1500 ran the light and I hit his right rear wheel and knocked the axle out of the truck. My Civic engine folded under the car. The airbag pinned me against the seat. A state trooper happened to see the entire accident. When he walked up to the car, he thought I was dead. I got out and walked away.
No way I am ever owning another vehicle that doesn't have airbags. Technology saves lives. Your life, or the idiots life that caused the wreck.

Financial advice is not a one size fits all shoe. Dave is focused on building wealth as his number one priority in life. Not us, we are minimalists, we do not need to continually reach for the next rung on the ladder. What happens to all that wealth when you die? Todays middle class lives like yesterday wealthy. I left home in 79. My parents never had two house phones, they had one black and white TV and an antenna that got three channels. We hadn't even heard of a microwave oven.
Vehicles:
We travel quite a bit. I like the amenities and convenience that new cars offer. Dual climate control, GPS, heated/cooled seats, TPMS and all the other stuff that makes your vehicle as comfortable as your living room. I can't remember the last time I had a flat or mechanical breakdown on the road. I bought my TJ because in that vehicle I didn't want all the stuff, but I do want it in my long haul vehicle.
Life in 2024 is good for the majority of Americans, much better than most of the rest of the world.

Also very heavy, much like other electric vehicles. They do more damage to the roads (akin to larger trucks, but they cost offset, EV's do not - some discount this but more weight is more weight, plain and simple) and will definitely do more damage in an accident, no matter what they hit. That's basic physics and mechanics. The weight differences for battery powered EV's is grossly remarkable and isn't being talked about too much, yet...
Comparison of some EV curb weights (not GVWR):
2022 Tesla Model 3: 4,057 lbs
2022 Tesla Model S: 4,561 lbs
2022 Tesla Model X: 5,390 lbs
2022 Tesla Model Y: 4,416 lbs
2022 Tesla Cybertruck: 6,843 lbs
2022 F-150 Lightning: 6,500 lbs - for reference, a 2010 F-150 standard wheelbase model weighed in at 4,693 lbs
2022 GMC Hummer: 9,063 lbs - the batteries alone weigh over 2,900 lbs, that's more than the curb weight of most ICE compacts and hot hatchbacks
It's fair to say that many new vehicles are larger and heavier, but EV's are substantially so as a result of the batteries.
Probably important to note that most drivers on the road know little to nothing on how to properly/safely handle their vehicles through the performance range, regardless of vehicle type and method of propulsion. EV's only magnify this issue, seeing as power delivery is practically instantaneous - they accelerate more quickly, go faster and weigh more.
All new vehicles manufactured today generate a remarkable amount of waste and pollution in the production of said vehicle. It's actually better for the wallet and environment to keep and maintain an older vehicle than to buy a new one every 3-5 years (there are valid studies on this). EV's generate even more waste and pollution when the mining of battery raw materials and battery manufacturing are factored in, very nasty and damaging processes, indeed. We won't get into who's doing the mining of the raw materials for those batteries in certain 3rd world countries...but child labor comes to mind.
Consider the charging of EV batteries. "From the plug" isn't a satisfactory answer to where the juice comes from to charge them. Over 60% of the worlds electrical power generation still comes from fossil fuels. Charging times are long and ranges are still on the low side, even lower in cold weather, it seems.
Consider the disposal and recycling of EV batteries at end of life cycle. Seems none of the EV manufacturers bothered figuring this out before they started building large quantities of vehicles and selling them to the masses. Unfortunately, this is typical when profitability is involved.
Some things to think about for those driving around in EV's today, particularly if they're being smug about it because they're "saving the planet". Not saying you shouldn't consider getting one, but most owners seem to get caught up in the hype (as well as rebates and tax credits) and are clueless as to the real-world impact these vehicles have.
Personally, I do not think battery powered electric vehicles are the answer. I also do not believe that ICE vehicles are the primary cause of carbon emissions. Everything we do generates waste of some form or other. Not denying they pollute, mind you, but there are other larger contributors that don't get discussed (for a reason). The little guy always gets it in the ass...
