Exhaust replacement recommendations?

Ok, so i'm brand new to the forum and to Jeeps. Just picked up a '99 TJ with 143,000 miles on it. I'm in CA and need a smog to get it put into my name. I took it in and they said I need a new Cat and then I should be good. I drove it today for the first time and it definitely has an exhaust leak somewhere. I have read all about the manifolds cracking, aftermarket ones are no good, high flow cats are not worth it and all that.

This being said, I need to replace my Cat no matter what so I might as well do the manifold all the way back and just make it all new and as strong as possible. I know the two piece manifold is the way to go with the accordians on it so it won't crack. Found this link on this forum here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0777KPM18/?tag=wranglerorg-20
Looks like a good one for cheap, anyone know if this will work in CA?

As far as cat and exhaust since I have to replace the cat anyway should I go high flow? I want whatever is most durable for the jeep, no need for any performance at all. I will probably put a Flowmaster or some kind of muffler on just for the deeper sound since i'm doing it all anyway.

Any suggestions on all of this? Thank you in advance and I look forward to spending lots of time on this forum as I get this Jeep built up.

That manifold should be OK as long as all the O2 sensors can be attached, but I would ask the manufacture for the C.A.R.B. number to make sure it's California approved.

Cats are a different story. Most aftermarket cats are NOT C.A.R.B. approved, so you must make 100% sure before you buy anything for a California vehicle.

Coadaman is right. California spends all of its time making up laws and that’s one of them. You can’t just buy any exhaust parts like the rest of the county. You have to buy what California will allow. Gee, not that I hold a grudge or anything.

Thanks for the info, one thing I forgot to mention, i'm selling my house next spring and moving to Reno/Carson City area so I won't need the CARB stuff. That being said, I can get it smogged the way it is, any difference in what I should buy? Or because it's a CA Jeep I need the carb stuff to bolt up?

No, any stiff will bolt up. If it's leaving California, Like I am soon , put on whatever will work in the state you're going to.

Sorry that I can't offer any advice on your aftermarket parts question, I've only dealt with the C.A.R.B. stuff.

A high flow cat will have zero effect on your TJ... zero. It's a complete waste of money and is IMHO nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Your catalytic convertor is not restricting the flow of anything from that 4.0, I can tell you that. You can replace it with any cat, but it needs to be one that is legal in California, or 50-state legal, which most cats are these days.

That manifold you linked to is a good manifold, so that is the one I would go with!
