If I was going to drag a bunch of logs around, I'd consider how I plan to attach the winch to the log and go from there. In my case, I'd acquire or build a choker using some graded chain with a slip hook on one end and a pear link on the other or even better, pear link on both ends so you have a choker that can't come unhooked. One pear link will fit through another of the same size.
After that, I'd go ahead and run sythetic line since the minor abrasion it will see going around brush and whatnot will not bother it at all. That is a direct counterpoint to using the steel cable and hooking back onto the cable as the choker which will tear up the steel cable after some use and it is a very sound rigging practice to NEVER do that anyway. So, if you are using an abrasion resistant log choker and hooking onto that, no reason at all not to run synthetic.

You know who doesn't do that? The little chopper they use to ferry loads in from Loon to Rubicon Springs. He has a lift line hung under the chopper that he hooks onto nets full of gear they ferry in. The one they were using when we were up there was easily 1.5" Dyneema with about 200,000 lbs. of breaking strength. The little Hughes 500 probably can't lift more than 1000 lbs per sling load so they were running a silly overkill factor except for one thing. They used a largish common tube thimble to make the eye. They had drug the end of it on the ground so much that the rope was worn all the way down to the edge on both sides of the thimble. Easily more than half the line diameter was gone. Still more that 10 times the safety factor they needed.Frayed rope
What many don't understand is that for low voltage devices like a non-waterproof 12 volt winch, it can be completely under fresh water or in a torrential all-week downpour and still work fine without it being waterproof. Smittybilt might be pushing that their winch is "waterproof" but that's just to attract those who don't understand it doesn't really need to be waterproof for it to work if it gets soaked. Even with their claim that it's waterproof a Smittybilt winch is still a Shittybilt winch. I wouldn't touch one unless it was strictly for bumper decoration and not intended for regular use.Warn is best by far, but don't be afraid of Smittybuilt, especially the Gen 2 or 3 that are water PROOF (not water resistant like some of the warn's).

Not that it matters for this discussion since no one would ever use solid wire to hook up a winch but solid in the same diameter always has a higher current capacity.
Where the F did you learn about skin effect? Are you holding out on us?Correct, and current on the outside of the wire is for RF, not DC or low freq AC.
