Fuel gauge reading wrong?

My fuel gauge drops insanely fast when it reaches the red warning line (which is at maybe about 1/6th of a tank left). Next thing I know it says that I have no gas left. When I refill the tank it only puts in around 10-11 gallons, and the owners manual says it holds 14. Does it hold that much, or am I just dumb?

Google search says 15 to 17 gal. I'd say your tank end of gauge needs adjusting.

It should be 15 or 19. I usually put in about 12-13 in my small tank se.

Even when new, those old gauges weren’t real accurate

Mine hasn’t worked properly for 10+ years. It never goes below 1/2. Ran out of gas once and learned my lesson.

So I’ve just been resetting the odometer each fill up.

I've never heard about a fuel pump recall on them. However, give your local dealer a call and they'll be able to pull it up if such a thing exists.

I recently bought an '04tj...manual says 19 gal tank that has 2 gal remaining when low fuel light comes on. I bought it in Florida and drove it home to Wisconsin so I wanted to know how badly i needed gas when that light came on. I ran it down till the fuel light came on, reset my odometer and then threw a gas can with a couple gallons in it in the back and drove. And drove. And drove. And drove....When I got to mile 68.4 on the odometer I gave up on trying to run it dry and stopped to fill up. It took 18 gallons to fill it. Now, I KNOW my TJ is NOT getting 34.2+ mpg! So I can safely assume my low fuel light does not come on with 2 gallons left in the tank and regularly run another 50-60 miles after I see that light.
