Fuel Pressure Issue

Hey Friends. I need some expert help in order to avoid parts I don’t need and money I would rather spend on fun stuff.

04 TJ - 98,000 miles. 4.0 Auto.

In order to install the body lift from JKS and my new rear bumper I had to drop the fuel tank. While doing that I noticed a crack on the filler inlet piece.

In order to avoid a whole new fuel tank I did a modification I found on this forum which you can see below. The backflow valve was removed in order to make it seal properly due to it being molded to the filler neck. I used the GM hose in order to add add a valve back. Nothing else was modified with tank or filler.

When I reinstalled the fuel pump I am getting either a lack in fuel pressure or something similar. The jeep runs great but cranks a little longer than normal on start up and a couple of times I have lost acceleration while driving at speed. Starts to miss and drops to 25 mph. Here’s what I’m thinking…

A. Fuel pump/sender was on its last legs and by removing/installing I’ve killed it.

B. When I drilled the holes to attach filler neck (below) a piece of plastic clogged the pickup line...


I don’t have any check engine lights or codes yet...I think I need a new pump/regulator. Do I need the whole Bosch module or just the pump?

After reading through this forum even more, can anyone comment that has replaced the pump but not the entire module? It looks like I can get the Bosch pump for $70 or the whole module for $200

You want the entire Bosch module IMHO. However, Bosch no longer makes it, so the next best thing is Delphi from what I hear.

Are you sure you are finding the entire Bosch module? Because if so, you'd better buy that ASAP. Those things are like gold around here

I just replaced the pump, both filter/screens, and the filter/regulator on my pump housing not long ago and the long crank issue is gone. I wasn't a difficult job by any means. Just a little time consuming and I had to buy multiple parts separately because the Bosch replacement pump does not come with all the replacement pieces. The filter screen it does come with is pre-installed on the pump and is not the correct one, and will not work for either of the 2 that are on/in the assembly to begin with. It does not come with a new rubber seal that installs between the pump and the internal filter/screen either.

Better buy that ASAP! One left in stock, and you may never find it again since they are discontinued. I'd jump on that, since Bosch is well known to be the best replacement fuel pump for our TJs.

It doesn’t have the regulator on top like the one I have now, is it just a little bit of a different set up than the stock one?

Bummer, I was totally wrong! That fuel pump is for the 2005-2006 models (which has the same top), I just verified this on Bosch's website.

According to the Bosch website, model 67726 is the correct unit for 2003-2004 TJs, in which case Amazon has none in stock, as they too have been discontinued.

If you can find any in stock somewhere else as leftover stock, I would snatch one up.

My fuel pump worked fine until I removed it to install a new GenRight fuel tank. Ever since then, I had all sorts of issues with the fuel tank level sending unit, who knows why.

Either wya, hopefully this fixes your issue.

If you do use Delphi, clean the tank out. From my personal experience and some reviews, the check valve in the regulator is prone to breaking. I didn’t clean the tank out the first time and I ended up doing the pump assembly again 7 months later. This time I cleaned it, there was a bunch of metal shavings and a broken o ring in there. The strainer had also already fallen off. It has a limited lifetime warranty at least.
