Guys this is what I do for a living, I am a painting contractor but we also specialize in epoxy Floors. This is a great thread!
As in most applications it’s all in the prep, grinding or blasting is best to acheave a 80-100 grit sandpaper feel. Second cause of coating failure is moisture coming up through the floor and pushing the epoxy off. To avoid this we always use a moisture barrier primer as our first coat. This can be done with solid colors or the chip look and even the metallic finishes. I like the 100%solides epoxy but can be a little more difficult to apply. One good idea is to cove the coating up the wall a few inches so washing and water does not get under the base edge.
