Gear Oil vs Engine Oil for Transmission

I'm a new owner so not sure what was done to it previously or when it was last done unfortunately

My thought process is to get to drain as much as I can, button everything up and do a level fill

If there is water, are there products I can use to clean it out?

Just refill it, drive it and drain it again soon to get water out.

You will know if it had water in it by the look of the old oil.

I've run the factory fill, MT90, syn 75W-90 that claimed it was yellow metal safe, and now 0W-40 syn in my YJ AX-15. Only difference I could tell is the synthetics weren't stiff on cold mornings like the non syn is. About 300K on it so far.

how often do you change the 0w-40 in your transmission?

It's been in there since '21, but I pretty much only drive the YJ during hunting season or on top down days. Maybe has 10K mi on it.

oh interesting, I daily my jeep and I am thinking of changing the transmission oil every 6 months (10w40 full synthetic) not sure if that's ok or too early.
