While it's difficult to get too much carrier preload, you can damage the housing with too many shims. Same as over spreading with a case spreader concept. Case spreader max spread is only 15 thou. Not likely with shims, but it is possible.

i made a case spreader but it was not used for either reassembly, i wanna feel something to have some gauge. i think i agree with you and using a spreader 1 could get over zealous with extra shims.
