I gave up golf over 15 years ago. I was too obsessed with it, spending too much time & money on it, and was never one of those guys that could go out & duff around for awhile with my friends to have a good time. I wasn't an angry-throw-your-clubs-in-the-lake kind of guy, but if I wasn't playing well I just wasn't having a good time. So there I was going to to the range 7 times a week, playing 2-3 rounds a week, playing tournaments, working on my sub-10 handicap etc. I decided it was getting stupid so I quit (I had also just met my future wife after having enlisted, so the golf thing was just not compatible).

Fast forward to today, my wife up & got me a beautiful set of Cleveland irons two Christmases ago. I was almost mad about it - I never expressed a desire to get back into it, didn't even want to go hit them, and it actually turned into a point of contention for over a year. Well, last month one of my coworkers who knew about that wanted me to fill out a foursome with them. I said 'fuck it, why not' and headed out. That first round was great, I didn't give one ounce of a shit, and I actually played very well. Got 4 pars! Since then I've been out a bunch, have gotten clubs for both my kids, & my 8 year old son is loving it. Brings back memories of hitting the course with my dad when I was his age.

Now comes the hard part of tempering my obsession & just leaving it at having a good time. I played an evening round last week & started mentally cataloging my bad shots again, and it was annoying to not be able to go to the range the next day & work on what I knew I did wrong. I feel like a recovering alcoholic who told himself he could just have a drink here & there socially without letting it get out of control.

Anyway golf blows, I hope you all did something better with your time this weekend.

When you bust an axle on the trail you have about two minutes to beat yourself up, call yourself names and cry about it. By the time your buddy gets to your door and asks if you got spares and tools the time is up. Same thing for golf.

I would make only one amazing shot in 18 holes, the rest sucked, but I would always go back for another round.

I’ve kept my clubs a long while since playing for the social aspect, I’ve not played in years but don’t want to close the door yet.

I had wrist surgery so every shot I take is either a corkscrew or shanks on to the other fairway. Worst case towards the parking lot.

I'm not bad on the green. Takes 8-10 shots to get there but at least nobody asks me to join their group.

I haven't golfed in 18 years.

Not much to do in the small town I grew up in except a bowling alley. Bowled so much I was first team all state. Got to the point where it wasn’t fun anymore so I quit for five years or so until I joined a work league.

Had fun for a few years bowling and pretty much throwing whatever was needed to win but never worried about handicap.

Then my office moved out of state and I haven’t really bowled since, I miss the people but I don’t really miss bowling.

We take the kids out every now and then.

I was a tennis player growing up. Too hyper to play golf. But all my friends played golf. Used to love going out to the putting green and messing around. Was like playing billiards to me. Never got into golf tho and no interest but I have all the respect in the world for those who try and those who excel at it. It's not easy. Definitely not easy to be consistently good at it.
