Half track roller for front bumper

This shouldn't be taken as any support of Nazis but the VW on the right is a-kdf-kommandeurwagen which has a roller and I believe was also 4WD. I don't know how many were actually made but I bet it was less than a dozen.
Beside that is a Schwimmwagen and to the furthest left is a Kubelwagen.

A lot of really cool German engineering came out of that really dark period in history. Fear and war seem to be really good at driving innovation.

To me, that roller would just get in the way since it hangs down below. I'd think an obstacle would have to be at the perfect height or angle for that roller to work as envisioned. Though my TJ spends most of its time crawling over big rocks, that roller didn't get me excited in the least. It caused me concern though, I'd think it would cause more problems than it would solve. At least for me.

Agreed. All I see is a big hunk of steel occupying a space that wasn't occupied before. And the diameter is too small to actually roll over anything easily.
