Evening yall,
Today installed a lunchbox locker in my 1997 Dana 30 4.10. All went well until I try to reinstall the carrier, the ring and pinion bind so hard its impossible to spin the carrier by hand.
I made sure the races and end caps went back to their original spaces. I didn't mess with any bearings or shims. I made sure to clock the ring gear back to its original spot and ensured the mating surfaces were clean and dry and all bolts were torqued in a criss-cross pattern until I reached 55ftlb.
Here's the odd part: if I insert the carrier into the axle, it spins fine. If I put on the driver side end cap and snug the bolts by hand, it spins fine. It's only when I tighten the passenger side end cap (closest to the ring gear) even finger tip tight that it binds up.
My first thought was that I somehow damaged a bearing, but to isolate the problem I removed the ring gear, reinstalled the ring-less carrier, torqued the end caps to spec... voila the carrier spins perfectly. Bearings are good?
So somehow the ring gear is binding with the pinion but from all visual appearances it sits perfectly flush against the carrier without a hint of wobble or being out of place.
What am I missing?
