How much back spacing is to much?

So, I've done research. I know what the ideal back spacing is. BUT. Ive found a set of 17" wheels that Ive been drooling over. They are no longer being made, so they set I found is used. I found a set of ATX Slabs that are 17x9 with 3.5" BS. Perfect right? Well, they are 5x5 bolt pattern. As far as I know the thinest (quality) spacer/adapter from Spydertrax is 1.25". That would put the BS at a total of 2.25". If my math is right. That would put my Jeep 1.5" wider per side, 3" total than it currently is with 15x8 with 3.75 BS. So, my question. Would this be a bad idea completely. And would it look absolutely ridiculous?

I'd find different wheels, those would stick out too far with the adapters. And when buying new wheels I'd insist they have the required 5x4.5" bolt pattern. Used wheels are sometimes inexpensive enough to be tempting but I'd hate to have to mount wheels with an adapter.

These are very similar, they offer them with a machined ring instead of black but I'm not seeing them in stock so you'd have to wait.

Too much BS causes the tires to hit parts of the suspension when turning.

This thread is the complete opposite except for the thread title. No big deal, just some clarification I hope.

Well crap. Yeah, thats what I was thinking.
Spiderlock sells the same wheel with the correct back spacing and bot pattern. Im just not a big fan of the webbing bead lock ring.

More BS is good if it keeps the inside of the tire close to its original position. Once you start moving the entire tire outboard you are adding stress to the axle ends.

Ideally you would have the centerline of your tire to be exactly the same as the centerline of the original stock tire. This helps keep all steering neutral and ball joints and wheel bearings in their happy place.
