I got my 2000 4 ltr tj on the road.I only drove it before I bought it up and down a lane because it was bought as is with no plates on it last winter. I knew it needed frame repairs ,brake lines etc.It had a low mileage motor. Just got it safetied a few days ago.I left the carpet out so they could see the floor pans I replaced and the rear floor area condition. When I drove it to the shop it had a lot of noise up front. When I put the carpet in after the safety it got a little better . I guess it must be normal but I guess there is only the carpet to deaden the sounds up front or could it be better with some sound deadening foam on the firewall.All the fluid levels are ok in the diffs and transfer case.

That's normal. The carpet is really the only sound dampening material that the TJ has, unlike other vehicles which have carpet and actual sound dampening material under it.
When you remove the carpet, it gets noticeably louder, and that is indeed normal. Many on here have put an extra layer of sound dampening material under the carpet which reduces the outside noise even more. If you have no intention of removing the carpet to go off-road (I never remove mine) then it makes sense to add some more sound dampening material under it.

That was my thoughts on it.When my wife went with me for a 100 mile drive yesterday I told her to bring her ear plugs. It was just a little noisier than I thought but a real blast. I am sure I will get used to it. I have the hardtop on right now.This is the one I laid under for 4 months last winter. It is now clean underneath with a solid frame ,new brake lines,rotors,calipers,floor pans and fenders.90%done now.

I removed my carpet and bed lined the interior. I have not had my hardtop back on since but with the soft / no top there is no difference other then a bit more heat. I'm sure in winter when the top comes back on I will notice it but my jeep isn't used as a daily so I am happy with the trade off.
