This past week I completed the R&R of the cracked pistons and rods with bearings, all standard size. It took me awhile as there were various delays for various reasons (life). At 70 years old, the most challenging aspect of doing this project in a cramped garage with no lift and in the frame were the physical ones. And it's been anywhere from 84-90 degrees in my garage. I could only work for about two hours at a whack. With the help of forum members and DexJ's videos and piston/rod services I was able to complete the job and this past week fired her up. First turnover of about 5 seconds, almost started. Tried a second time and it fired right off. No leaks, etc. This Jeep has never run this smooth and quiet. It's like a different vehicle. I think it may have had a small broken off piece on the side of #3 piston for awhile. It's always had a slight tick since we've owned it. I figured it was a tappet tick. When the #6 skirt broke off all the way to the oil ring, it made quite a racket and we got home shortly after. That's what prompted the R&R. IMO, the 4.0 is a great little motor that is rather simple to work on. Compared to modern engines, it's a dream.
