I got my license!

Congrats...took me 3 times to pass a hundred years ago. The fact that you work on the vehicle gives so much more appreciation for it. At 15 I was changing the oil, dash board and interior of my brothers 67 mustang convertible. I don't think he can change the oil on a vehicle now (40 years later) My first car was a 1977 Mercedes 300D with a 180K on the clock.

I didn't get my license until I was 18, and then still didn't really drive until I was 20.
I drove at 14-15 on major roads out of necessity with a single mom (younger for the rest), I was at the DMV the moment they opened on my 16th birthday to make it legit. Ive never understood waiting, even if one doesn't drive

Happy birthday and congrats! Time for the wheeling pics to start coming!

Had no need at the time.

Safe is 50% you and 50% watching out for the other jerks on the road. My kid was t-boned by an old lady who ran a stop sign when he was 16. Lucky no one was injured, and the lady had decent insurance.

Be safe, enjoy the freedom. Seems like yesterday I was taking my driving test in grandmas giant Cadillac Eldorado. Good times ahead.
Now Grandmas Eldo was a safe car. It must have weighted 5k lbs

That's awesome, congrats!!! Two hints from an old guy... watch out for the other drivers and watch the traffic conditions well up past the car you're following. You know what you're planning to do but you don't know what the other drivers are going to do until they do it. And there are plenty of idiots out there perfectly capable of killing you with their car before you even get a good start on life.

Have fun getting out on your own!!!

Congrats on both the birthday and the license. Don't do what I did and total 2 vehicles within 9 months of getting my license. I was lucky to walk away from the second accident. Passenger side seat ended up sitting in a ditch on the other side of the road from were I ended up.

As mentioned. Drive like everyone else is going to do something stupid. Watch ahead of you and plan what you will do when someone does do something stupid.

Another grumpy old fart piece of advice: If it isn't in your lane, and it isn't capable of getting into your lane, don't pay any more attention to it other than to insure it doesn't move. In other words - don't slow down and rubberneck at the guy changing a flat on the side of the road. Especially if its on the other side of a freeway! If it isn't in my path, I couldn't possibly give a shit less about it - KEEP MOVING! "Charlies Angels" could be dancing nude on the side of the road and I would pay exactly zero attention. I'm there to drive, not rubberneck. Needless to say, if you have one of those damn smartphone things, TURN IT OFF when you're driving. Or run over it on your way out of the driveway... </grumpy old man rant>

Congrats and happy birthday.

Don't die in a car accident. Good luck.

Welp, I just got back from my first time driving myself to class, (I'm homeschooled, but take some outside classes) on the way there my Check Engine light flashed on and a few times starting off of a stop it would shut off for a split second then drive like normal, on the way back from class I had no such experience (even though the Check Engine light is still on)

Buy yourself a cheap fault code reader, you'll need it. Another thing is one of the cheap harbor freight tool kits for the jeep.

I grew up homeschooled until I moved to AZ and did my last two years of high school public. Wish I had stayed the course of homeschooling and did some CC classes instead. Even now I’m much better off than most of my peers and I attribute that to learning at my own pace.

My advice-

1.Go really slow in parking lots

2. Blind spot mirrors help

3. Pay attention.

4. Yes, Pay Attention.

5. Put your phone away

6. Don’t go around on empty

7. Make friends wear seatbelts.

8. Look left, right, then left.

9. Slow down at intersections

10. Don’t give or take courtesy- just drive safe and let others do the same. Be courteous, but convincing someone to cross into a lane you can’t see can get them hurt.

11. Use your turn signal.

12. Slow down when it’s wet.

13. Don’t take chances. Wait if you aren’t sure.

14. If for ANY reason you are in no shape to drive, do not drive.

15. Don’t let people use you to drive them around.

16. Watch where you park- especially behind others-they will back all over you.

17. Pay attention to tire pressure, condition, brakes...if anything feels like it needs checked, it probably does.

Yes, I am a dad, and I was 16 once too. Be safe. The best thing you can do right now is develop good driving habits.

I lived 10 miles from town. I drove well before 16 and got my license as soon as I could.

That or spend weekend nights with my parents watching crap like Love Boat.
