Installing AC, should I replace heater core?

Like the title says I'm installing a Jeep Air AC kit this weekend and I'm wondering if I should replace the heater core while I'm in there? I'm assuming it has the OE Mopar unit in there now with 150k miles on it but it isn't leaking. Seems like mopar replacements aren't available and everything else has mixed reviews. I've already had a bad experience with parts store radiators and don't really want another one of those experiences here.

Also, I'd need whatever core by this weekend if I'm going to replace it. I'm taking Fri off after the 4th so I have a nice long weekend for the installation.

If you can find a suitable replacement, I would. If it goes out anytime soon you’ll wish you had.

I think it was @Mr. Bills that had a source for a good replacement on the older TJ’s.

I think I might just pick up a Spectra one. Tough part is going to be getting something a little out of the ordinary by saturday.

Ordered the spectra from amazon, I'll let you all know if it starts leaking in a year. I'm sure if I didn't replace it my original would start leaking in november when it starts to cool off.

Have you changed one in a TJ before? There are a couple write-ups in the How-To section on this site that covers dash removal/installation and HVAC box removal/installation.

I haven't, the Jeep air kit seems like it has pretty good instructions and I've also printed out the entire HVAC system of the service manual for reference.

I put AC in my sons jeep about 2 years ago, I replaced the heater core at the same time but saved the old heater core... just in case. I got the new one from NAPA

I did the replacement a few months ago and ordered 3-4 different ones to compare which looked the best. They honestly all looked pretty cheap and flimsy, with no real difference in "quality" between any of them. Getting the dash out isn't hard, just super tedious, lots of little connectors, screws, etc. Take your time, take lots of pictures, and prepare to spend longer than you think it'll take you.

Dabro, how did the Spectra unit work out for you? I also have a heater core swap to do, and since I didn’t see any updates I’m wondering if it’s still going strong.
