Intake Whistle?

Hi,

My 1999 TJ SE 2.5L has had this whistle since I purchased it last year. I am just about getting to a point where I can look into it. My first guess was alternator bearing, but after listening closely to how it changes/goes away with higher RPM, I am thinking intake leak. Please have a listen to the video and let me know what you think.

Sounds hydraulic to me. I'd be looking at the PS pump. Low fluid can cause it too. Possible pressure line collapsing internally. But most likely the pump it self.

I agree with the above, I'd be looking at the power steering pump I think.

When you turn the wheel (when it's sitting still), does it make any noise?

check your idler pulleys. That sounds constant with RPM to me. Typically, that means something in the Serpentine system. Power Steering is a good guess too, but idler pulleys are cheaper!

Guy at the auto parts store told me to disconnect the battery lead from the alternator and see if the noise goes away with no load. Well, it sure did! It was the alternator. Thankfully it was an easy fix. The cast aluminum case was actually cracked on the old one.

That's a sharp parts guy. You need to frequent that place.

You need to go back by there and buy him a donut , and put a "Trail Rated " badge I the center. Send me the bill.
