Is Rotella T5 10W-30 still good oil?

It's just oil. This is a Jeep Wrangler with a 4.0 engine. It has more in common with a tractor than it does a Ferrari.

You could put grocery store brand oil in it and it would be just as good as that Rotella... no kidding.
I take it Chris that you have never lost a cam lobe, if you did, you would not be saying that oil is just oil. Respectfully, Tim

rotella t-5 is actually pretty reasonably priced $16 a gal, if its even slightly better its well worth it. I bet grocery store oil isn’t much cheaper

I have not, but I've also run conventional oil in every vehicle I've ever owned (unless the owners manual called for something very specific) and never had an issue.

I'm not one of the guys who buys into the oil thing. Sure, some engines require synthetic as they are built to a different standard. The 4.0 isn't one of them. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, which I respect 100%.

At that price then you can't go wrong! I was under the impression it cost a lot more, in which case I would have avoided it. I'd buy it in a heart beat at that price.

I just kind of smirk when I hear about people paying a lot of money for a gallon of Mobile 1 (or similar) for their 4.0, thinking it's going to be some sort of magic elixir. Of course if that's what people want to spend their money on, then who am I to stop them.

I am not claiming synthetic is what we need, I just know that there needs to be enough zinc and diesel oil has it. Tim

Do we know that diesel oil STILL has it?? I know diesel oil specs have changed recently “emissions” and there has been talk of it not being recommended for some older diesel motors.

well the rotella 15-40 had 1500 ppm at one time

Id like to find out if it still has it. Several years ago when diesel oil was cj-4 spec I’m sure it had it but now I think most diesel oils including rotella are ck-4sn and from what I’ve read they basically changed it to be cleaner for all the dpf equipped diesels.

Unfortunately it looks like all that data is 12+ years old now. I suspect the formulas have changed.

There must have been a time
when we could have said no.

Diesel engine are Completely different animals with different gallery sizes etc.

There is a reason the engine manufacturer recommends 10w-30 and the Diesel engine manufacturer recommends 15w40 or 20w50 or whatever the seals and system is designed for.

Engineers are pretty smart fellers.

The factory fill on a Cummins ISX has been 10W30 for the last 5 years or so, although many shops still us 15W40 for servicing. We just changed over our bulk to 10W30 (CK-4 of course). The fuel savings are about 1% and while that may seem trivial, it adds up on a big rig since fuel costs are huge over the life of the vehicle.

Id like to find out if it still has it. Several years ago when diesel oil was cj-4 spec I’m sure it had it but now I think most diesel oils including rotella are ck-4sn and from what I’ve read they basically changed it to be cleaner for all the dpf equipped diesels.

Quite accurate. The CK-4 formulation is for the new 2017+ GWG engines for the after-treatment device (SCR,DPF,SOC). Apparently, something in the older formulations would cause an issue over time. Not sure if it was plugging or degradation.

The "SN" is a gasoline engine rating meaning you can use it in your Jeep/car/whatever. I picked up some of this Chevron 10W30 Synblend CK-4/SN for the TJ.

I am not a fan of oil samples, a year or 2 ago I sent in a sample to blackstone that was out of a 6.0 diesel truck that was making oil at a high rate roughly 1 gal every 1,000 miles. I was sure it was diesel but sent in a sample anyway. Sample came back normal something like 1% diesel “less than normal” this couldn’t be right because I drained at least a gal to much oil out of it, the oil was obviously to thin as well. Changed fuel injectors problem solved. When I’ve mentioned this on other forums somebody said blackstone can’t really get accurate results on fuel delusion, too me that’s kinda important. Sorry for the long rant but I just feel I should share my experience

I don't think anybody is suggesting that you turn off your common sense and blindly follow Blackstone. If I sent in koolaid and they told me it was chocolate milk I wouldn't trust them either. I use them for my transmission so I can tell what components are wearing. The also tell me the viscosity but maybe that's changed. If you say it was obviously diluted and the viscosity came back normal it seems obvious a mistake was made. Just because one bolt stripped I wouldn't assume all of them are bad.

My engine builder told me to put Valvoline VR1 in an old engine I had rebuilt. I'd never spend that kind of money on my 4.0. Replacement engines are so cheap it just doesn't justify the cost of expensive oil. If I use walmart proline or valvoline I can almost afford a rebuild every 200k with the money saved.

What we need are reports of engine failures along with what led to the failure. All we really know right now is that our 4.0s will survive a long time with oil in them. We have also learned that some people in this thread have vehicles with diesel engines, also containing oil.
