Is something missing on my engine? Starting the slow learning process.

I guess that is easy to find a replacement for?
Very easy, even for me all the way out here in NZ.
Pretty sure your local auto parts place would have one that fits or jump on Amazon, or you can pick one up from a wreckers.
 
Stant makes a good replacement that omits the clicky anti-overtighty thing.
 
From what I understand it's a ratcheting design and as temperatures increase the plastic expands to cause slips. Similar to how child proof medication containers work, but the opposite direction.
I don't think it's quite that sophisticated. The slip clutch is just to prevent overtightening. But it still gets stuck and breaks apart. Mine did. But the Stant version never has.

Maybe. All of the times it's ever slipped I've left it alone for an hour and it worked perfectly fine again. Never had to replace or pop mine off. I guess it could have just been a unexpected 'feature'

I like to dump the old oil when it's hot and I've always had issues getting that confounded thing off when servicing, I have the OEM cap on order - I like to use OEM wherever possible - so I will be testing this, with great anticipation :)

I like to dump warm oil as well. So does every single Jiffy Lube in the country. That is why I am suspicious of the OEM cap purposely being tight when warm as a way to protect me from something hot. I'm going to argue that it is a flawed design intended to protect the engine from the user. Not the other way around.
 
Surly someone has a newish working cap to test the theory by first removing and replacing when cold, then getting to operating temperature and seeing it the cap is harder to remove with the engine running them when it was cold or left for a few minutes to cool.

Anyone?

Would be funny to be so stupid as to not notice this after so many years.
