I didn’t state that correctly.
If one side of the axle moves fore / aft, then the axle is no longer parallel to the other axle, and the wheels are no longer pointing straight forward, they are angled to the side. That will cause the vehicle to swerve one way under acceleration and the opposite way under deceleration.
