Jeep buying help

You are smart to come here and learn what to look for. We've seen far too many people come here after the fact and find out they got screwed. Stay with us here and we'll do our best to help make sure your hard earned money is well spent and you don't get screwed.

Some sellers may not even realize the frame is bad so you can't count on them to tell you the condition.

Get under the Jeep, and take pictures and post them here. One bad sign is clumpy and bumpy paint to cover the rust. That's the worst attempt at deception. The other obvious problem is rust and flaking badly. Look under the carpet too. If there are holes and a lot of rust, that is a bad sign. Walk away. If it is smooth and black underneath, you are probably good. Check below the doors along the body on the outside for rust too. Especially the corners right next to the front wheels. If it is heavily rusted or pitted, the frame is probably much worse. If it has Rocker guards, that is normally a sign of someone hiding bad rust, unless it is a Rubicon.

Thank you.

Drive a little south for one without rust. I bought my one owner Texas Rubicon from a retired military guy who moved to Washington D.C. ((90 miles from me) The Jeep spent a couple years there (road salt). It was perfect and I treated inside the frame a couple years later and found a "dime bag" of rust. All is well nearly 8 years later. Rust is like Cancer, catch it early and the survival rates are much better. I've survived both.
p.s. The #1 killer of men is MARRIAGE. 🤫

If I were shopping for my son, we would :

- avoid rust

- avoid one that has been repainted

- avoid one that is heavily modified

- avoid terribly high mileage

For sure post pics or links on here-wealth of knowledge-

Good on you for earning , and saving to buy. It is not illegal to do that contrary to popular opinion.

Thank you. I’ve been saving up since 7th grade . Hahah

Thanks man . I appreciate it and will do.

Wow I didn’t even know that. Thank you

Once you find a rust free one down south, drill two 5/8” drain holes in front of the rear control frame brackets and behind the front control arm frame brackets and paint the raw edges. Clean the entire outside of the frame, lightly sand it and top coat it with several coats. Then spray black fluid film inside the frame. Every year religiously wash out the frame, let it sit a couple days, and fluid film it again.

Do you guys know where I should look?? I have been looking on facebook marketplace but is there any other sites?

You can follow the For Sale thread here on this site, and FB is your best friend in the worldwide web. When you have prospects post them up with frame pics. Lots of pics. You do not want to get screwed out of your hard earned money. Everything is fixable, but rust is a cancer.

I would just Google "TJ Wranglers for sale" or "TJ Wranglers For Sale Near Me". A lot of sites should come up. I saw quite a few listed on Car Fax and they seem pretty good with the information they provide on vehicle history. You can probably search on the CarFax site itself as well. If you want to search by state, "TJ Wranglers for sale in Georgia" and go from there. Whatever you look at, make sure to at least take some cardboard and a flashlight with you to put down and get a good look under the Jeep. This is the very first thing you should do when buying a used Jeep. If it is badly rusted there is no price that is worth the risk except maybe salvage prices like $1500. It is too dangerous to even drive one like that. You don't want to hit a pothole and have the frame collapse on the highway. Catch a glance at the owners face too, when he sees your flashlight and cardboard. If they seem perturbed, you likely caught them trying to cheat you. Good Luck.

Jeeps are not the best single vehicle. Best as second or third. Do not even look north of TN. (Booge might help you look in VA if you ask him !)
TN, AL, GA, MS, TX best without going out west. Look on FB and see what people are asking for what. Decide what you want; auto or manual, hardtop, color, mods, etc. Stick to it and be patient, one will come along. (tell what you want and we can look as well) Take cash and be ready to walk away.

Send pics of one or two you are thinking of and let us give advice. Roger ! D

Looks nothing like the “ dime bags” I used to buy.

Getting sick and fucking tired of the
“ don’t look north “ of the Mason Dixon line bullshit.
Wake the fuck up and realize there certainly are rust free TJ’s up here. Just have to sort through them a little more.

Yeah, it's also not like rust buckest have been banned from going below the Mason Dixon line.

Oops, I may have just inspired the south.

There are probably FB groups in every state. Here it is called FL jeep owners and FL Jeeps for sale. People in FL who are knowledgeable and honest post pictures of their frames for you to see before you even make contact. There are plenty of 10k jeeps here, just need to find the right combination you are looking for. The money you have saved is all the money in the world to you...do not blow it on a rust bucket.

I found my Jeep on craigslist. Craigslist is a sewer, but no more than FB is, so take a look as you don't have to give them your left leg or your soul to use it (CL).

Warning for those trying to buy a rust free TJ north of M-D line.
