Jeep Cherokee Chief Edition

What years did they make the '80s-'90s body style with the Cherokee Chief edition? Possibly '84-? My father used to have one and it never really was brought to my attention till I was looking through old photo albums.

I believe it was 73-84.

I had the base Cherokee in 73 and was never happy with it because I couldn't get a decent size mud tire under it.
In 1974 a member of our club (Alabama Mud Turtles) who was a Jeep salesman called me and asked if I was to order a new Chief what would I have on it?
He actually ordered it and I loved it, but like I told him then, I could not afford it. So I think the Chief started in 74 but memory isn't that great anymore.

His was very similar to this. This is an 87 according to the description? Not sure. His had the hood graphics too.

Wait, they actually had a frame? I thought Cherokees were all unibody?

I think it was just a trim lever on the XJ. All XJs were unibodies as well as were Comanchee pickups. And I think the biggest tires any came with were 225 70 15s.

That's what I thought. I never heard of a Cherokee with a frame

I think what o meant was some thing that lifted the body up unough to get a tire under it. Hell it was over 40 years ago. Cut a bit of slack.

I may have found what I was looking for-
1984–1990 included: cloth plaid-pattern upholstery, and AM/FM radio with two speakers.

I had a 1985 XJ chief (first vehicle at 15). It was a trim package that included extra skid plates, a little bigger tire from the factory,the lovely plaid cloth interior and I believe (I know mine did at least) a rear tire carrier. The photo attached is a picture of the day I got her for $400 and after spending about $3000 in rebuilding drivetrain, and maintenance for a (at the time) 20 year old vehicle.

Very cool! I love the 2 door Cherokees. I had a 1999 2 door XJ.
