Jeep code P1281 (too cold too long)

So I was plowing with the jeep and got a p1281 code. I also noticed the fan was on immediately upon startup. Is the fan supposed to be on at startup? I never noticed the fan off.

This jeep is a 2003 tj (new to me) with 4.0.

Google says thermostat issue but I suspect fan.

That code indicates the engine is taking too long to warm up which would immediately point me straight at the thermostat. I'd replace it with fresh good (not store brand) quality 195 degree thermostat. Make sure what you buy is not a "failsafe" as those are definitely NOT failsafe. They may not fail in the more harmful closed position but they have earned a reputation for failing entirely too easily/often in the open position.

That code indicates the engine is taking too long to warm up which would immediately point me straight at the thermostat. I'd replace it with fresh good (not store brand) quality 195 degree thermostat. Make sure what you buy is not a "failsafe" as those are definitely NOT failsafe. They may not fail in the more harmful closed position but they have earned a reputation for failing entirely too easily/often in the open position.

I have the same code, thermostat as I can watch the temp gauge heat up sloooooowly.

Gonna replace it, but only when the weather decides to warm up.

High today was 19, supposed to be 6 tonight :oops: :oops: tomorrow the high is 28.

Maybe this weekend it will warm up, even next week will be fine.
 
Once you've got the thermostat replaced, immediately change your oil. It will likely have an unhealthy amount of gas in it

if you have an aftermarket Hayden fan clutch they tend to lock up when cold and stay that way until they warm up and then start operating normally. But the fan could blow until it's blue in the face and you should still reach operating temp if your thermostat is operating correctly, so I would echo the advice already given that you need to change your thermostat.

But is the cooling fan supposed to always be spinning? Could the fan be free spinning (clutch not engaging and not under a load).

It'll always spin, but there's a big difference in speed when it's engaged vs disengaged. If you're hearing the fan roar at 2500rpm, it's engaged. It's not supposed to do that until it's getting 170F air off the radiator, but some of them do that when it's cold out and if it's 18 and your engine isn't getting to operating temp youll probably never get it warm enough to free up. I had one that roared the entire way down a mountain in 50F with a failed thermostat that wouldn't even get the coolant up to 170.

What? Why do you say that?

I believe his premise would be a combination of the PCM injecting extra fuel and a less ideal piston ring seal due to running outside the intended operating temperature.

It checks out in theory but I don't know how big of a difference it would make in practice.
 
My understanding is that it would enrich the mixture all the time to match the measured coolant temperature. An oil analysis of sniff test would verify, but an oil change seems like cheap insurance to avoid accelerated wear.
 
Did the new thermostat resolve your issue?
I've been wrestling with this one. Several quality thermostats and a couple of temp sensors later and I still can't get my engine to run above 170. Burped it out really good each time.
I notice the gauge will show 195 if I turn it off for a while after its warmed up but it will immediately go back to 170 after I crank it up.
Had a new engine rebuild back in the summer, new CSC radiator,... not related but...
Not sure where to go next.

are you suggesting a new water pump? the one i have is practically new but i don't see how a bad one could make it run cool.
 
Im suggesting you get a Robert Shaw thermostat sourced from Flowkooler.

I went through a couple of new thermostats that failed to work.

A Robert Shaw thermostat fixed my issue.

I bought the thermostat but I honestly haven't replaced it yet. Too lazy, lol. I didn't have any codes over the summer. But I didn't really use the jeep since it's mainly a plow truck. But the code popped back on again when temp outside dropped. Even though others have said otherwise, I still think it could be related to the engine fan. The fan is blowing hard immediately upon starting no matter the temp. I don't think that's normal.

Inside the cab the heater works great. I get heat fast.

I may put a piece of cardboard in front of the grill and see what happens.

It's not normal for the fan to be completely locked up, but it's a thermally actuated viscous coupling and more often than not, they start spinning when you start up and it actually takes some heat to get them to unlock and freespin the way they should, so it's definitely possible your fan clutch is bad, but it's not causing your code. If the thermostat is doing it's job, there's no coolant flowing through the radiator for the fan to cool - it's just recirculating to the heater core and back to the water pump.
 
Had a first time P1281 myself for the first time. Was ready to order that Robertshaw & then the light went back out & its been ok. Temp gauge still staying kinda low. Probably just my AZ Jeep saying WTF, why is it 39 degrees in the mornings?!! 😂🤣

Yeah that makes sense. The coolant wouldn't even be reaching the radiator

Thanks about the fan.... I always wondered what would trigger the fan "clutch" (coupler) to engage.
