This has piqued my interest. Considering getting a 4 door, mild commuter 4wd. For Jeep’s we’re looking at XJ’s, liberty’s, grands, etc. Saw a KJ for sale locally for $5k but it was snapped up really fast before we could take a look at it.

I had an '06 CRD. Loved the diesel mileage and power. Did not love the maintenance costs or hassle. Anything to do with the engine cost a ridiculous amount of money and was almost all a huge hassle to do. Water pump (for example) cost $400 (10 years ago) and, if I remember correctly, required removal of the front clip, radiator and timing gear housing. There were a lot of things like that on it. No complaints on the rest of the vehicle.
Yep. Price is why I bought my Liberty. But it depends on where you are in located, in order to get one cheaply. Mine was way way less than 2 thousand dollars.

I have owned a 02 and still own an 04. I gave my 04 to my wife when her car died and bought an 01 TJ for myself.
First off those 3.7 engines don't like to be overheated. As soon as you notice the temp gage going up over the halfway point, pull over. My 02 was overheated one too many times, dropped a valve and lets just say it wasn't a pretty sight. Rust is also a problem, if you live in the rust belt like me. My 02 was rust free when purchased, but I only owned it for 6 months.
The 04 was already starting to rust, and now the rocker panels are gone.
Before I junked the 02, I stripped it for all the new parts I installed, and then spent 6 months removing everything I could possibly use. Power window motors will fail, and power door locks. Valve cover leaks are common too. Just check the oil often. Heck, my wife ran it very low on oil a few times and she still running good with 188,000 miles on it.
4WD even with all season tires, will get you where you want to go no problem in the snow.
I still remember the last big snowstorm years ago. Not the one we had here recently.
Cars were stuck on every little hill, and the Liberty even with it's really cheap tires, had no problem getting me to work. Once out of the city, I seen cars in ditches. My biggest obstacle was a school bus slid sideways, completely blocking the rural 2 lane road. But there was just enough room to get around it, by driving partially on someones front lawn.
We rarely get heavy snowstorms here, every 5 years or so. But oftentimes roads are flooded. My Jeeps never stalled when hitting deep water. Yes it's quite a surprise when your going 35 and hit deep water at night. You just can't see it, until your right there. Throw it into 4WD and you will not loose control. Good luck with you purchace.
