Keeping dumping money vs 392

Some Gladiator owners assume that the reason you don't have one is obviously because you can't afford one.

I'm sure it's not just limited to Gladiators.

I got some Jeep parts off the marketplace once.

I went to get them in my Ranger.

Seller is in a Gladiator.

We chat a bit and he's intent on telling me how successful his business is, how big his house is, etc.

Then he says "That's a nice Ranger but my Gladiator payment is probably not much more than yours"

So I replied that mine didn't have a payment, so his probably was indeed a little more.

That right there was pure douchebaggery on his part of “oh look at me and my status symbol” and it backfired 🤣

Let you in on a little secret
My brother in law just paid $1300 for a guided Rubicon Trail adventure and they had the worst time of their life. 12 hours first day, and stuck for 50 mins of every hour with ZERO communications. The owner of the company flew in via helicopter and got his ass reamed

Gladiators were breakin down left and right on the trails, most of the breakdowns…Gladiators. As big of an off roading fan as my BIL is, he said NEVER will he do Rubicon again. It was horrible

I thoroughly enjoyed the Rubicon. Can’t wait to get back and run it again. My guide was a beekeeper from California and an awesome guy. I had to insist on buying him lunch once we completed it.

I think the problem was too many Gladiators. That combines the already troublesome JL issues with something that is too long for most trails.

I wheeled a somewhat easier black diamond trail a couple weeks ago and we had two Gladiators. One of them was someone with 'big balls' as he liked to say. Standard issue roof top tent, loud stereo, etc. Got wedged pretty good on the first obstacle (Dishpan in Big Bear, CA) and didn't want someone to winch him. After wasting about 30 minutes, we winched him unwillingly. The wheelbase is just too long to do anything black diamond. I'm sure they make good over lander vehicles and work trucks. Just not good for rock crawling.

Back to the 392...
I told my friend that got one: If I had the money, I'd love to buy a 2 door JLR AND a 4 door JLU 392 and swap the engines, sell the 4 door. That would be pretty sick even though it would still probably keep going into limp mode.

When my wife graduated college I strongly considered a JLU for her. The ecodiesel in my mind rode better than the 4 door Bronco I've been around. I don't have any regrets not getting a JL. My wife's friend had one that was dead for 30 minutes in my driveway before it decided to randomly start.

I honestly think the quality is quite poor, but I think we have all had the argument here that all newer cars are. I don't think I could mentally handle spending as much money as people do on a vehicle like this and having more problems than my 10+ year old vehicles.

I'd like to make two different points:

1 - I have had my 392 for about 18 months. Zero off road time. Zero problems. I spend even more time at www.jeep392.com as I do here. There are people with problems. Common issues are rear locker light indicating the locker is locked when not, common JL overall issue and supply chain is way behind on locker sensors. Some dealers have swapped axles because they could not get a locker sensor. Another issue is transfer case sensor, much the same. I have heard very little of limp mode but it does happen. When there are a few people on a forum saying they have similar issues all of the sudden everyone thinks it's common but may only be small percentage. Some are also worried about the new technology but I'm sure those same people, as long as they are old enough, were bitching about the new technology in the "new fangled" 1997 Jeep Wrangler that we all love so much. And yes, the technical prowess on a JL forum is no match for this TJ group.

2 - The ABSOLUTE only reason I have a JL is the 392. You have to drive it to believe it. I never wanted a new Jeep or a 4 door Jeep but couldn't pass it up.

Was this just around 10ish days ago? Pretty sure I saw them on the trail..

The Rubicon is a great trail. When I lived 5 hours away, I took my 3 kids and wheeled it in my 82' Scrambler for my first trip. I have a picture of the three of them standing in front of it I will have to dig up. We made it all the way through in two days just following the oil trails. All I had to go by back then was 4wheel magazine's that I consumed every month. I think I did the whole trail at least twice with that jeep and took a few friends up and did parts of the trail after.

With a 60.3" long bed I say NO to any work truck application. A 1983 ELCamino has a bed length of 79" , we will have to ask @RINC to see if that would qualify
as a heavy haul truck. :p

'72 C-20 Longhorn. 6" extra bed length.

Talk me off the ledge. I completed a v8 swap with an automatic transmission a few years ago on my 04 TJ and it's been a lot of fun to drive. I originally did a currie 4" lift and replaced all the steering linkage along with rancho shocks, the ride is tolerable with 35s. The jeep has 125k miles and was clearly beaten up in it's prior life. I have three kids so fitting the whole family for a joy ride barely works (while they're still small) but you can forget about even bringing a freaking folding chair to a soccer game with no storage. Following the classic trend of throwing all disposable income at the jeep and still having more to do, I have dreams of a body off restoration, new rear axle (to take more HP, right now is stock Dana 35), long arm lift (for ride quality), more HP from the engine (which means probably going from 4l60 to 4l80), new paint job, etc etc etc. I am not a rock crawler, I am a nostalgic mall crawler (first vehicle was a 91 YJ) with pride in my rig. I do love working on the jeep.

All that being said, should I sell my rig and just get a JL for the size upgrade and creature comforts? My family loves going for rides around town but the ol TJ is only so practical to take around. I could even go crazy and sell my jeep, sell my daily driver (yukon xl) and just buy a 392 that would be a ton of fun and likely retain a good bit of resale value. My wife currently believes I am delusional. Am I?

TRX over a 392!

I have a friend that recently bought a Chevy Colorado 4X4 and got it with the long bed option. Decent size bed for that size of truck. He's a land surveyor and using it as a work truck. He had considered the Gladiator, but eliminated it due to price and the bed length.

The Yukon XL caught my eye. Son just bought a 2001 xl 2500 with a s/c 6.0 and we are going to make it a little more off road capable. So I am thinking keep what you got, put hitch towbar on the TJ. Tj is toy status, street legal and pull it behind the burb as someone would take a UTV with them when you go out for the weekend.
