Key code location

Hey, I'm wanting to locate the key code to record it in my jeep file for emergency situations. Where car I find this? '04 X

I believe the OEM keys are made off the VIN or something, so I don't think there is a key code per se, but if you're talking about the chipped key (grey one), they are easy to clone. The procedure to clone is in your owners manual and blank keys are less that $15 online. All you need are 2 factory keys and then you can clone up to 8 (I think) spare keys.

All TJ's have a key code connected to the VIN that the dealer can use to cut a new key provided you have the original lock cylinders. There is also a PIN that is used and needed to program a new SKIM or PCM. SKIM in 98+.

To answer the question, the dealer should be able to give you the key code if you take in proof of ownership and the VIN.

And if you already 2 working OEM programmed keys you can clone your own spare keys in a matter of seconds. No special equipment needed, just do it in your driveway.
