Leather Steering Wheel Restoration

If you are looking for a DIY approach with a bit more of a finished look than the Wheelskins, I've used this:

Not perfect, but then again I am no seamstress...

Wait, I am a seamstress...

I've also used the Wheelskins, and went to the Redline for the finished look around the spokes. But truthfully, I liked the feel of the Wheelskins a bit better.

And after all that having been said, I've never really been very happy with the Redline - mainly my sewing job and the wrinkles - but also because even though I opted for the "thick padded" version, it was not as thick as the Wheelskins cover - which basically wrapped around the stock leather wheel. The Redline actually replaced the underlying leather - and the result was not quite as thick.

So I just ordered this thing from our friend in Poland:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2857903047...pid=5337789113&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1

He has "thick" in the description, so we shall see...

I have this on my '00 and would HIGHLY recommend it. It is worth the cost. The leather is top quality and the fit/finish is perfect. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

'97-'02:

'03-'06:

Not sure if the seller has any of the '97-'02 in stock. I didn't search real hard on the sellers page.

I did this, and while I'm definitely happy with it for the price and would for sure do it again if needed, it definitely doesn't look/feel professional around the spokes area. I'm sure some of that is just a skill issue on my part, I would love to see what a good job might look like.

I did mine with the same kit, not sure it's any better than yours though 😂.

If i decide to upgrade it will be the wheel from Poland thick pading with red stitch. It looks dang good. Stitching like on the Porsche.

I had mine redone by a guy in Texas who is no longer doing them. Added padding around the 3 & 9 positions. The feel and craftsmanship are great but the leather is starting to show some wear spots.

At the time I had the TX guy do mine, the guy in Poland said he no longer sources the early TJ wheels and wasn't open to me sending him one. Not sure why.

In any event.. I have the Redline leather wrap, a cheap Amazon leather wrap and an extra steering wheel.. all boxed up.

That looks really nice, Mike. And thick.

This thread is interesting to me, one thing I really liked going from my '23 VW back to my TJ was how much skinnier the steering wheel was in the Jeep. Seems like everyone else likes 'em thick..

The guy did a really nice job with the stitching. I sent him the measurements from the wheel in my '21 Cherokee and asked that he taper the thickness down to stock at the top.

The leather.. it's so-so. Smoother and shinier than I would have liked and not a good match to the RedLine shift boot and arm rest but it's a lot nicer than the stocker.

I just received a quote from https://craftcustoms.com/ for a complete restoration with baseball stitching: $299 plus shipping and tax. They state a 3 weeks turnaround, give or take. I used this company (when their name was different) to add foam and leather to my old E28's plastic steering wheel, and it still looks and feels great after more than 50k miles. I will most likely go this route-when it comes to these types of things, I tend to go with the professionals.

Does include a wheel or do you have to send them a donor?

Read through it well.. It does require a donor wheel. I have an extra..

Thanks-much appreciated. I am on my 3rd wheel right now, sourced from eBay. I still have (and will send them) the original wheel, after I clean up the skeleton some-it's in terrible condition and I want them to have good bones to work with.

My extra is a 9 out of 10.
I bought a ratty eBay donor and delivered it to the guy that did my last re-wrap.
