Ive started noticing this recently, I have to turn the wheel quite a bit to get it to turn, I know there is some play in the steering wheel, but even when i'm actually turning it feels like there's almost no resistance. Aside from the play, is this normal? and how to fix if it isn't.

Be sure your pitman arm is tight and dry test the front end..,have a friend turn the wheel from 10-2 slowly and make sure everything that moves moves something else with no slop.
will do, i just installed the omix oem replica pitman arm and go an alignment about 4k miles ago. could any of this be related to steering fluid and the pump or no, and what about the play?
Not sure, if it just started I’d watch for loose tie rod ends , etc ...the play with the engine off is the true mechanical play in my mind.

There was always a little play in both of my TJs steering wheel, but it wasn't much at all. If there's an excessive amount, the first thing I would suspect is your steering box, but as @AndyG suggested, there are other things you can check before that.
