Some people can tolerate colonoscopies when awake, some can't. I've been awake for the three I've had done so far - it isn't comfortable but it isn't that bad either and I can walk out of there and go to the nearest Denny's afterwards.

Yeah, I asked the last doc to skip the sedation . She said no, she's not comfortable with it.
I'd get another doc but it's such a pain in the ass!

Try landing one of those in heavy seas. Much harder than it looks. The Canadians came up with a system that uses a winch in the chopper that actually pulls the chopper down the deck and holds it there until it can be chained down. We (USN) used to just bounce it down then hold it down until it was chained. I was the number one hose man (yes, it's true) on the landing team and saw hundreds of landings, using the old Huey. I wonder why they have so many deck obstructions in this picture?

I've only jumped out of helicopters and done landings on the ground. I can imagine it's got to be pretty scary and a little hairy

Getting zapped off the roof of a humvee during slingloading ops and your buddy missed grounding the helicopter is a bit hairy
I preferred doing a chinook jump over a c131 anyday.
I agree though. Helicopter landings on a moving target. Nope

You're showing your age. We've been using Recovery Assist Secure and Transit (RAST) for years now on CGs and DDGs.
It grabs the helo and winches it down. Works pretty good.
The pic is a U.S. DDG in moderately rough weather but I've seen flight ops in worse.
The little deck house is for the Landing Signals Officer (LSO). The bits (not bollards) are stationary on the port and starboard sides but there's a retractable chock and bits on newer ships at the stern.
This pic makes me homesick!

It grabs the helo and winches it down. Works pretty good.

Actually, a second look indicates that it's not really rough seas you're looking at.
The helo is secured in the RAST cart and the ship is making a hard right turn.
Totally safe!

You're right! I had to look that up, but apparently if its a SINGLE unit (apparently with a cross piece) it *can* be referred to as a bollard, otherwise bollards are on shore and bitts (note spelling) are on ships. I learned something new today.

I only ever did sling loading operations during Air Assault school. We had a few mishaps but no one ever got zapped. I've been in some pretty crappy flying conditions but ya landing on a moving target isn't one of them.

I guess I am! I was stationed on a brand new 'oceanographic' ship in 1971. Our flight deck was a blank platform over the aft weather deck. We had a hanger for two helos and a winch system for moving them around, but nothing to assist in landing.
