Can one of you Squids maybe explain what was being done to the main guns on the ships? Or what those smaller boats are doing near the sides?

This is only a guess, but it looks like maintenance is being performed on the main battery. It's a never ending chore on a ship. Those gun tubes need to be cleaned and oiled just like your M-16 does. In almost the same way. The deck crew gets really pissed when you drip gun oil on their wood decks. Hence, the barrels are swung out so it drips into the water.

The boats are liberty boats. They're are on booms, port and starboard, that are swung out to tie the bowline of the liberty boats to. That way, you don't have to hoist the boats on deck and nest them all the time.

This is all really old school Navy stuff.

I agree. Those big guns were maintenance intensive. The powder bags left all kinds of junk in the barrels. Mix that with salt laden air and you could have some real problems. So they had to be cleaned and oiled regularly, as mentioned above. And yes, those old battlewagons had steel decks covered with teak and it was standard punishment to 'holystone' the deck, with a brick and bucket of sand to keep them spotless.

My ship didn't have any big guns, but we did have those booms. Ours were square, about six inches wide, with non-skid on top. For the passengers, the boats pulled up to the bottom of the ladder so they could board for a trip to the beach. The boat crew had to walk out on the booms and go down a knotted line or a rope ladder to get to the boat. After doing that about 20 times, I was still scared sh-tless every time I had to do it. Coming back was even more fun.
 
I was black gang. We rarely got shore leave in those circumstances, and went down a gangway when we did.

One of the ships I was on spent two weeks in Papaeete, Tahiti. I spent two weeks rebuilding six auxiliary condensers. I spent a total of five evenings ashore during those two weeks. About 20 hours total.

General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) has officially delivered its first XM30 Wolf infantry fighting vehicle prototype to the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, marking a major milestone in the military's effort to replace the aging M2 Bradley.

The XM30 program, formerly known as the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle, is designed to field a modern, digitally connected armored combat platform. Built to carry a two-person crew alongside six fully equipped infantry soldiers, the Wolf features a hybrid-electric powertrain that reduces fuel consumption and acoustic signatures. Its core offensive power comes from an unmanned turret housing a powerful 50 mm XM913 chain gun, backed by launchers for anti-tank guided missiles and loitering munitions.

To survive modern battlefields saturated with anti-tank threats, the XM30 incorporates modular armor alongside the active-protection Iron Fist system, which automatically detects and intercepts incoming rockets and missiles. The design relies on an open system architecture, allowing military technicians to easily integrate future software updates and hardware upgrades as technological needs evolve.

The delivery initiates a crucial competitive evaluation phase. GDLS is competing head-to-head against American Rheinmetall Vehicles, which is producing its own prototype based on the KF41 Lynx platform. The U.S. Army will put both candidate systems through rigorous developmental tests and troop trials to evaluate mechanical reliability, crew ergonomics, and combat performance under realistic operational stress.

Additional prototype deliveries from both defense contractors will follow ahead of large-scale field tests with operational units. The Army aims to evaluate the competing vehicles during field exercises before selecting a single winning design for full-scale production, with plans to begin fielding the final XM30 variant by the late 2020s.

The delivery of the XM30 Wolf brings the U.S. Army one step closer to deploying a highly lethal, digitally advanced infantry combat vehicle capable of outmatching modern battlefield threats.

THE BRADLEY’S SUCCESSOR IS HERE

The U.S. Army has taken a major step toward replacing the legendary M2 Bradley.

General Dynamics Land Systems has delivered the first XM30 “Wolf” prototype to the Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, beginning a new phase of testing and evaluation.

The XM30 is designed as a next-generation tracked infantry fighting vehicle, with a two-person crew and capacity for six infantry soldiers. Planned capabilities include a 50mm automatic cannon, anti-tank guided missiles, active protection systems, advanced sensors and hybrid-electric propulsion.

But there’s an important detail: the Wolf has not yet replaced the Bradley. It is still a prototype competing in the Army’s XM30 program. American Rheinmetall’s competing design will also be evaluated before the Army selects a winner.

If successful, the XM30 could become a major part of how U.S. mechanized infantry moves, protects and supports troops on future battlefields.

In 1940, an aerial photo of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, showed the yard constructing Dry Dock No. 5. In the surrounding area, at least eight warships and the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) can be seen. This scene depicts Bremerton as one of the main centers for the maintenance and preparation of the United States fleet leading up to World War II, when large warships still dominated activities in the shipyard area.

Now, the area has transformed into the modern complex of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF). The facilities are much more advanced and focus on the maintenance, repair, modernization, and inactivation of modern warships, especially submarines and nuclear-powered ships. A comparison of a photo from 1940 with the current condition shows significant changes in technology and the shape of the fleet, but Bremerton continues to maintain its role as one of the important centers of the US Navy in the Pacific region.
 
I've still got the scar from a hot .45 shell that got stuck under my t-shirt.

I had a .45 get stuck between the bow of my safety glasses and my temple, was not a fun day.

The worst part was figuring out what was going on it wasn't immediately evident a casing got stuck there but I could feel it.

Once, which emphasis on ONCE, had a 9mm shell get between my glasses and my cheek. That was the last time I fired a weapon without wearing a cap of some kind!

You learned the same lesson I did and I almost always wear a hat.

For those who don't know.....
That is/was a mine clearing vehicle... The stuff in front was suppose to roll over mines and it'd blow up and was mounted on a hinge.. But this rig drove over the IED 3 times that day before it finally blew...

I was lucky I guess since I didn't do a lot of convoys so never delt with IED's but did with VBIED's and getting shot at.... Rockets & mortars aren't any fun either.

In Afghanistan, I was attached to the engineers who were assigned to Route Clearing. They we're definitely built to more or less protect the individual inside.
Reminds me of my brother's Husky that he got blown up in. He was doing route clearance and hit a homemade ampho IED. It blew the whole front off, rolled the armor plating back like tin foil, launched the vehicle into the air and landed on it's side. He was lucky to walk away with only a severe concussion.

Those Husky's were pretty innovative though. We towed the replacement front and rear axles with us to replace on the road for when they did hit something and get blasted. Glad he was able to walk away from the blast!

Yea his was in Afghanistan around in mid-2009. He made some videos of a bunch of there finds and hits with some pretty wild explosions. Unfortunately, that day was his turn.
