I’ve been hearing every little noise under the hood and the OPDA is always on the back of my mind so I finally picked up a new one and changed it today, easy as everyone says. Some uneven wear on the gears but no missing pieces, the old OPDA seemed to have a bit of play in the shaft and the idle was at times a tiny bit rough, the idle now is rock steady after changing the OPDA I’m not sure if I’m imagining the improvement?

Mine looks to have been the factory original I imagine it could have been Chrysler updated? Anyway I’m glad it looks normal, best thing now is I can forget about it for a while.

What model year? Your Profile that is supposed to have your Jeep information is empty.

Whoops, OK I’m all updated. 2006 Rubicon automatic 3.5 lift on 33x12.5

Both drive shafts, PCM and the OPDA amoung a host of other things are all new. I think that’s most of the 2006 issues I need to worry about.

To @1515art :

Your perfectly normal 05-06 OPDA with so little wear after 186,000 miles is a welcome counterpoint to the chicken little mentality of those who seize every opportunity to claim that those model years should be avoided at all costs.
Makes me happy and a excellent sign on the condition of everything else

It looks titanic blocking the view out my rear window. I’ve never actually needed it myself, I’ve filled a few other people’s tanks on the trail. It’s good for peace of mind and I guess I’ve run to the end of some roads I might have skipped without the extra fuel for insurance, or sweated bullets worrying till I made it home. I worry About the extra weight added to the swing out tire rack with the 33, but it’s held up fine for a couple of years.

I concur. My 06 OPDA with 80k miles looks perfect when I pulled it out to replace it with the Crown. I’m completely confident the $100 Crown OPDA will be just fine for the life of the vehicle and that the OPDA issue is blown out of proportion.

I’d recommend that anyone with an 05/06 just change it out as part of regular maintenance with a Crown unit every 100k miles just for peace of mind.

What other awesome vehicle can someone have that you’d actually be able to say can go for hundreds of thousands of miles, anyway? Our TJ’s are built to last, and I have absolutely zero regrets buying the very last year and the very best package one can get with a TJ... a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 6-speed manual with hard top... and I got it for such a great price.

Now the PCM issue on the automagics sounds scary because of the scarcity of the part, but I have a manual, so meh! :-)
