Well, it is officially mine, money has changed hands. They'll detail it out and charge the A/C so I can pick it up first thing Saturday morning.

What exactly does "once they can get it to pass California smog" mean? Who are "they" and what do they have to do?

What exactly does "once they can get it to pass California smog" mean? Who are "they" and what do they have to do?

"They" is one of the state certified inspection stations, and "what" they do depends on the year of the vehicle. For 2000 and newer model year vehicles, the state connects to the OBDII port remotely to make sure their are no codes that would trip a CEL and then they make sure all the monitors have run and are set to READY. For 1999 and earlier model years, they also place it on a dyno and perform a sniffer test at different RPM levels. Once the vehicle passes the required tests, the data is transmitted to the state DMV and only then can title be transferred. And BTW, we have to do this every 2 years. Gotta love California

Wow. Really is Kalifornistan...

We do have to have emissions testing every two years in Albuquerque, but I have not heard of that being a requirement to issue a title. Good luck with that!

Not all of Cali has to smog every 2, just the metro areas. North of Santa Rosa we only have to smog when selling a vehicle.
