Need help diagnosing no-start

I forgot to add that the last time I drove it before parking it, I gave it sudden heavy throttle input trying to accelerate pretty hard, and immediately heard a loud pop, almost like a backfire. I drove the 20 minute drive home and then it sat until after I replaced the water pump and tried to start it. It didn't give me any problems on the way home, but I feel like that might be significant info in diagnosing the problem.

I checked all the fuses, nothing blown.

Is it possible for the crankshaft position sensor to malfunction and not trigger a diagnostic code? I don't want to just throw parts at it without knowing for sure it's the culprit.

Well, to give an update, on a whim I tried to start it up today. It weakly turned over (been sitting a while) and started. I checked for leaks since it's the first time it ran since I changed the water pump and thermostat. It ran rough for a minute or so, with low idle, and almost stalled at a stop sign. No leaks, so I drove a couple minutes down the highway to fill up on gas, and all the way back. It got up to operating temperature and idled just fine. I don't know if I should trust it, but I'm never too far from home, so it's back to daily driving, I guess.

I don't know why it started. Heck, I still don't know why it stopped running in the first place. But I figured I'd give an update.
