New double DIN

Just ordered this genius bit of kit. It’s a old head unit cover plate to go over your new head unit and hide it from prying eyes. Following this thread I decided to go down the double din route. However, I live in a city and just put a fancy new Twill Bestop on so didn’t want to constantly be worried someone was going to cut through my top to get to the head unit. Anyone used one of these before?

Haha, well if they did they would be happy to find a Sony AX5550d underneath! The head unit is only a few hundred dollars, it's more the cutting through my top that I'm worried about. I tent to spend some time in Barcelona throughout the year (I drive there with the TJ) and car break ins are a massive problem there. Still happens here in London but not as common.

Been thinking about doing the same but worry about resale value afterwards. Ya know, messing with the original parts. Also worried about someone slicing my new Supertop to steal it haha.

These aren't classic cars. It won't affect the value whatsoever. Before TJs become classics you won't be able to get electronics (CPS, TPS, PCM, etc.) for them anymore.

Well Zorba, You just found one of those three RIGHT Here, Original Original Original. I struggle with Mechanical updates, but I have done many. bumpers lifts control arms driveshafts wheels tires. I would like to change the front fenders but I cant do it.

Thanks for the post. I recently bought the Sony XAV-AX1000. After watching a few videos on youtube about double din installs, I suspected the sony radios being single din with the double din screen would fit in a TJ with no cutting of the inside of the dash. Haven't had a chance to install yet as its in the body shop, but look forward to installing this. Thinking of making my own video for youtube to share this.

i like it so far but does your unit make any noise while its muted?

Does it sound like it's coming from the subwoofer? If so, the gain is turned up to high on the amp. I would check that first. This happen to be when I installed an aftermarket radio. I thought I was going nuts until I started to mess around with the amp.

i dont have a sub so it couldnt be that. i ended up requesting a new one so ill find out if it was a faulty unit or not. i got it done by a highly reputable audio place so it makes me think its the unit

Keep us posted. Tracking electrical noise and gremlins are not fun.

Yea I wasn’t keen on hacking behind the dash but this stereo is perfect with the single din!

does anyone have the console subwoofer and connected it to one of these Sony bad boys?

Yep, I have the factory sub option in my Jeep. I replaced the speaker but I'm using the stock amplifier with the AX5000 and I think it sounds really great. No special wiring was needed for the sub. Just the standard 8 speaker wires.

Normally I agree with your position on these type of things. I like to keep things simple too. For me I decided a backup camera would be valuable since visibility out the rear window is so poor on the Jeep due to the spare tire and windsheild wiper. So I have a double DIN on order.

I looked at the Sony XAV-V10BT very seriously before I ordered a Kenwood unit. I really liked that it was a single DIN. My order is on back order at Crutchfield and hasn't shipped yet. Now I wonder if I am making a mistake purchasing something that requires cutting the factory radio support shelf. I might have to reconsider.

I really go back and forth and up and down and sideways and all over in this topic. I start at a position like Zorba, where its a basic utilitarian vehicle and doesn't need much. Then I decide the backup camera would really be an asset due to the poor visibility out the rear window. But I still require a volume know for simplicity. Then the next thought is that Android Auto would be nice to have for map navigation. Then I remember I don't need or really want all this electronic garbage in my Jeep. I just want to enjoy the raw, basic, utilitarian machine as it is. So I end up back at a simple cheap radio. Then I think about a backup camera and the cycle starts again.

@Fargo - I went with the Double-DIN Sony AX-5000 and it did not require any cutting of the factory shelf. This is due to the way Sony designed this unit. The back of the unit is a single-DIN size connected at the top of the LCD panel. Take a look online and you'll see what I'm referring to. They make a similar model with a volume knob but for me the volume button is perfect as I've found volume knobs to be basically a round click-based set of buttons instead of a smooth sweep up and down. That style of knob has also been a bit laggy in my experience.

I wanted the larger panel due to aging eyes and the Jeep's natural bumping around ... much easier to hit the buttons while driving around

I dont have my backup camera installed yet but it will be before too long. Hope that helps ya.
