Hello all, will be getting my first Jeep in about a week from a private seller. looking forward to getting her home. its basically all stock but that leaves it up to me to make my own changes down the road.
here is a photo of it.. kind of simple looking but the gray/black contrast is growing on me.

Hello Chris, there was frame rust that the owner had repaired using what I believe was the safeTcap unit, very solid repair. rest of frame looked pretty good from what i can see. I spent a lot of time checking it out underneath and while I am no expert, I felt comfortable with what I saw.
there was some body rot in front of the rear tire behind the rocker panel that you can not see looking from the outside but if you get under and look up, its in that area. not too concerned about that, frame rust scares me more than body rust but will have that fixed.
only other rust is the typical fender rust you can see in the photo.

overall its very clean, no other rust, dings, major scratches etc. 98k miles.

As long as you felt comfortable that's all that matters. Rust is like the plague with these TJs, but as long as it was taken care of properly then there would be no reason to worry about it. Assuming you're getting it for the right price, it sounds like a great buy!

I will probably take it to a place to clean out the inside of frame and use that eastmans interior frame coating and POR15 on the exterior for some added piece of mind and try to keep it out of my mind lol and not worry about it.
he is selling it for about 2k under the KBB value under the fair condition due to the frame repair, it normally would be listed as good condition but he used fair condition due to frame and then went 2k below that. most will prob say I paid too much (6k) because it had rust issues but at least I know it was fixed, passed inspection etc. hard to find a jeep in my area with out rust (PA, uses salt and we get decent snow).nothing against 4cyl or soft top but lots of hills in my area on the highways and hardtop best for winter,

everything else is either more money or 4cyl and softop for same price so I figured that is about 2k right there for the 4.0 and hardtop. fingers crossed lol.

Doesn't look lifted. Enjoy the ride, these are great vehicles for general putzing around and especially great out in the woods. I went looking for a four banger ragtop with a manual transmission, but then again I don't do much highway driving. LOTS of hills around here. You're going to have a blast in that thing!

well the deal fell through. bummed but I guess things happen for a reason. the search goes on. I am seeing mostly 4cyl for sale and most people say to go with the 4.0. I have not test drove a 4cyl yet so I guess I should do so in order to see if it will have enough power to handle long hills and enough get up and go speed to merge on highways etc. if anyone has a 4 banger and feels its adequate for what I am looking for let me know. not looking for a rocket but also not something that cant maintain 55mph going up a long hill on the roadways. thanks

@StG58 as well as @TJ4Jim and @PStov98TJ have 4 cylinders so they can chime in on them.

As for maintaining 55mph up a hill... Shit, even a 4.0 with big tires has problems with that.

@Germanshepherd , I have a four banger, and love it. You have to understand what you're dealing with though to appreciate it. I have no issues going up hills on the freeway, or merging with traffic. It does 70 - 75 down the freeway just fine. BUT, and it's a big but, there are two things you really need to keep an eye on. The first is weight. Keep the rig as light as possible. The second is gear ratios. When you go for bigger tires, plan on changing out the gears. I used a 27" tall tire as my base and worked from there. For instance, with a 31 or 32" tire, go with a 4.88 ratio. You've got 5 gears, use them all. It's easy to dog out the four banger, but I like mine. YMMV.
