I recently replaced the heater core on a 1998 se.. everything went well. I was driving home the other day close to dark and someone was waving me down I thought they were just going to compliment me in my Jeep LOL .. but they said I had no lights in the back.. then I kind of looked around and realized I only have brake lights and only have headlights. I was just looking at things online and realized it's not even running lights that are not working I guess I don't even know what you would call these lights I haven't trouble shooted anything. I first would like to know what to even look for maybe a fuse or what these lights are even called. So at night time only headlights work and when I hit the brake ..brake lights.. any advice or schematics or pictorials would be great.

Ok I downloaded that 1400 page document last night lots of pages but very handy I will get home and check that first thank you for the heads up!

In Canada we have Daytime Running Lights, DRLs. Which turn on a TJs headlights when the TJ is running. In order to turn on the park and tail lights we have to turn the headlight switch on. What you describe is a common problem in new cars with DRLs since the dash also lights up. Most people don't even realize the tail lights are not on at night.
Add the "auto lights" feature and people drive completely oblivious to life, assuming everything is automatic. Not sure if this has anything in common with your problem, but the condition, only headlights on is a DRLs function.

So I went to the hardware store or auto parts store and they said to me it could be maybe the wrong lamp because I have brake lights reverse lights turn signals everything that would mean maybe not a fuse..I've been working 10-hour days and when I get out it's dark and it's beyond freezing with wind chills so I admit I don't get right on top of it that's why I'm kind of in this form asking every little question so if it means I have to go out and see if the lamps are incorrect which I have my owners manual right in front of me so I know exactly what..because there's one front light that was cracked and I remember seeing the bare bulb thinking I need to replace that cuz I just bought the vehicle from my family member not even a month ago so it has had lights.. so my new question is could it be one wrong lamp and something burned out and now it's an open circuit so now I don't have the correct lights when I'm driving ?
I'd be surprised if all those lights used the same fuse.
As for the wrong lamp possibility, did you just change a lamp? If so, I guess it could be the wrong one, but if if you haven't changed any while replacing the heater core the chances of it being the wrong lamp are slim to none.

No I haven't recently changed any lamps.I mean when I have the time which I really want to make the time I will go through the fuses in the lamps I suppose.but sadly I don't even know which fuses to look for it yet I mean I'm still trying to figure out what these lights would even be called on the fuse panel or fuse box.. I just don't understand I have blinkers I have reverse lights I have brake lights but when I'm driving at night and put my headlights on I don't have any kind of other lights I just don't see how four lights front and back don't work but the filament on the same lamp does so I don't know how it would be a fuse you know.. but that will be the fun part and troubleshooting I just don't see where I'll start other than the lamps themselves then I'll work my way back to the fuses?

Turn signal, orange in front and red in rear, rear bulb does turn/tail/brake lights.
I had my rear turn signal stop working but taillights and brake lights still worked, yet that’s all one bulb. Replacing bulb fixed, it’s 4 small screws to get in there.

I just checked my 2006 owners manual. While some things are different between the 1998 and the 2006 I'm pretty sure the yellow 20 amp fuse, #1 in the upper right corner is for your PARK LPS "parking lamps". It's also for SKIM (the sensory key) which may not have been available on the early TJs.
Pull that fuse out, if it's blown you just need to change it. If it's not blown you'll probably have something disconnected or a broken wire somewhere under the dash.

... So it's my tail lights and front parking lights that are not on.
Ok GREAT.. I peaked in the glove last night.. I purchased a fuse puller and some fuses.. I saw that right up in the top corner as you say.. I'm hoping that may be the fix.. if not I'm prepared to start running my meter on things and I'll go from there. Thank you for the information!
Figured out the issue with not working Taillights and
Parking lights...
A friend and I recently removed the dash to replace the heater core. When working on the heater core we had to dismantle the inside of the cab including the 100 way wire harness? Long story short there was a junction block with about 9 connections to the left side of the steering column . I got under there and saw 3 out of the 9 were about an 1/8" back from being clicked in. I got all types of excited thinking this has to be the issue and I pushed them in until I heard a click .. jumped out of the vehicle and .... LIGHTS!! So anyway thank you everyone for all the help with trouble shooting the vehicle elsewhere!
